Several socialites exchanged knowing looks, barely suppressing their anticipation for what was sure to be an entertaining disaster.
They’d all noticed Anastasia artive with Lancey and felt a stab of jealousy. When they’d heard this was her first wine event, they’d assumed she was completely out of her depth.
Lancey had even mentioned bringing her to “show her how these things work.” Now, being called up to lead a tasting would be the ultimate
humiliation.
Mrs. Patterson looked expectantly at Anastasia, hoping she’d volunteer.
Before Anastasia could respond, Lancey stepped in protectively. “This is Anastasia’s first event. Perhaps next time would be better?”
Megan smiled with false sweetness. “Oh, Lancey, we’re all friends here. It’s just a casual tasting, nothing too formal.”
Megan had never thought much of Anastasia anyway–always considered her beneath their social circle. Sure, she looked the part today in her expensive outfit, but class couldn’t be bought.
She was practically salivating at the prospect of watching Anastasia crash and burn. Let’s see how Lancey defends her precious daughter–in–law after this embarrassment.
Lancey’s jaw tightened, ready to shut this down, when Anastasia gently placed a hand on her arm.
“I’d be happy to give it a try. Thank you for the opportunity.” Anastasia’s voice was steady and confident.
She rose gracefully, that same composed smile never wavering as she made her way to the main tasting table. Her movements were fluid and self–assured–not a trace of nervousness.
Lancey watched her with growing admiration. That’s my girl.
Valeria and Joanne exchanged victorious glances, barely containing their glee. They were about to watch Anastasia make a complete fool of herself in front of Manhattan’s elite.
Anastasia reached the table and picked up the first bottle–a Sauvignon Blanc from Napa Valley. She examined the label briefly before addressing the
room.
“Let’s start with this Sauvignon Blanc. You’ll notice it has that classic bright, crisp character–perfect for an afternoon like this.”
She poured samples with practiced ease, her movements confident and deliberate.
“When you taste it, you should pick up citrus notes, maybe some green apple, with just a hint of minerality on the finish. The acidity makes it really food–friendly.”
She moved through each wine with impressive knowledge, discussing terroir, vintage variations, and food pairings like she’d been doing this for years.
The room was completely silent, hanging on every word. Even the women who’d been prepared to watch her fail found themselves genuinely impressed.
Valeria’s confident smirk began to falter. This can’t be happening. This is not the Anastasia I know.
The praise started as soon as Anastasia finished with the last wine. “How impressive!” “Such refined palate!” “What wonderful insights!”
Valeria felt her blood pressure spike. How is everyone buying this act?
She was convinced Anastasia had somehow prepared for this, maybe gotten coaching or crammed wine facts beforehand. There was no way h stepsister had suddenly become this knowledgeable about wine.
The applause was still going when Valeria suddenly stood up.
