“Get lost!” Cassian’s voice was ice cold.
Jasper had been about to say something else, but when he saw the murderous look in Cassian’s eyes, his pupils contracted and he slunk away.
“Honey, come inside for dinner,” Ana called to Cassian.
“Just a minute,” Cassian replied.
Ana hurried over. “What’s wrong?”
Seeing Ana poke her head out with such a worried expression, Cassian couldn’t help but smile.
He reached out to pinch her cheek, but then suddenly pulled his hand back, remembering what it had just touched.
That hand had touched Jasper. It was dirty.
“I forgot to buy the salt,” he told Ana.
Only then did Ana remember. She laughed. “Oh, right!”
“There’s a corner store right downstairs, but Grandma doesn’t get along with those people. So you’ll need to go out the front gate, turn left, and walk about a hundred yards. You’ll see Wilson’s Market–that’s Mrs. Wilson’s place. She and Grandma are good friends.”
Cassian listened carefully to Ana’s detailed directions before saying, “Got it.”
He took her instructions seriously, and after going downstairs, he actually left the complex and went to Wilson’s Market just as Ana had described.
Ana stood on the balcony watching Cassian walk away, and couldn’t help but think of when Jasper had visited her grandmother before.
Back then, they’d also run out of salt, and Ana had given him the same careful directions. But before she could even finish explaining, Jasper had cut her off impatiently, saying it was just a pack of salt–why make it so complicated?
He’d said the feuds between old ladies were just petty nonsense. Why hold grudges for so long?
He wasn’t entirely wrong. Her grandmother didn’t have any deep hatred for the downstairs family. She just preferred shopping at Mrs. Wilson’s because they were friends. But one time when Mrs. Wilson’s family was at a wedding and the store was closed, her grandmother had gone to the closer shop. The owner had made some snide remarks about loyalty, saying if she wasn’t going to shop there regularly, they wouldn’t sell to her at all.
Her grandmother had been so angry that she’d rather put sugar in her soup that day than buy salt from those people.
It was a small incident, but it had created bad blood between the families. They didn’t even greet each other anymore.
Sure, it was trivial, but her grandmother wasn’t some high–powered executive. At her age, these small neighborhood relationships were what mattered most to her.
If someone couldn’t respect her on something this simple, could you really expect them to show respect in bigger matters?
In the end, Ana had gone downstairs herself to buy the salt while Jasper sat in the living room playing video games.
When she got back, Jasper had mocked her for walking so far for just a pack of salt when they could have ordered delivery faster.
Ana was lost in these memories when she noticed someone waving at her from below.
Looking down, she saw Cassian returning with the salt, waving up at her with a gentle smile on his face.
The golden light of the setting sun bathed his face, making him look like a victorious young hero returning from battle, and the sight hit her right in
the heart.

Warmth flooded through Ana as she raised her hand and waved back enthusiastically, like lovers reuniting after a long separation,
It wasn’t until Cassian disappeared into the stairwell that Ana finally looked away.
When she turned around, she saw her grandmother’s eyes brimming with tears.
Noticing Ana’s gaze, her grandmother quickly turned away and pretended to casually wipe her eyes.
She and her late husband used to be like that too…
“Grandma?”
Ana quickly went over and put her arm around her grandmother’s shoulders. “Are you okay?”
Her grandmother shook her head, her voice thick with emotion. “I’m fine, dear. I was just thinking about your grandfather.”
Ana felt a sharp pang in her chest.
She remembered him too–that gentle, refined man from her memories.
Grandpa had adored her grandmother. Even when money was tight, he’d always tried to give her the best of everything.
But the man who’d devoted his life to teaching had developed lung cancer and died so suddenly in the ICU that he never got to say goodbye to his wife.
It remained her grandmother’s greatest regret.
Her grandmother took a deep breath and said gently, “Ana, it’s okay to take a wrong turn. Everyone makes mistakes when they’re young. The important thing is cutting your losses and getting back on the right path.”
Ana knew what she was referring to and nodded. “I understand.”
Her grandmother squeezed Ana’s hand. “Don’t be foolish. Never go backwards–there’s nothing good waiting there.”
Ana nodded seriously. “I know.”
She paused, then added, “I love Cassian. We haven’t known each other very long, but somehow it feels like I’ve known him forever.”
