Fighting back her fear, Ana quickly pressed every floor button she could reach.
Thankfully, after dropping several floors, the elevator finally came to a stop.
Even though they’d stopped, Ana’s heart was still pounding, and she didn’t dare move.
She pressed the emergency button, and after a moment, a voice came through. Ana explained the situation, and they promised to send help as quickly as possible.
That’s when Ana heard rapid, panicked breathing behind her.
Using her phone’s flashlight, she turned to check on the other girl, who had gone completely pale and was tugging at her collar, clearly having trouble breathing.
“Ana quickly moved over. “Hey, are you feeling okay? What’s wrong?”
The girl swallowed hard and managed to say, “I’m scared… I can’t breathe.”
“It’s okay,” Ana said gently. “We’re safe now. I just called for help–they’ll be here soon.”
“If you don’t mind, let me help you.”
Ana helped loosen the girl’s collar and used some papers to fan her. The girl gripped Ana’s hand tightly, and with Ana’s presence, she gradually began to calm down.
After what felt like forever, they were finally rescued.
“Good thing you pressed those buttons–that’s what stopped the elevator,” one of the rescue workers told them.
Ana breathed a sigh of relief, feeling like she’d just cheated death.
“Thank you so much,” the girl said to Ana, her voice filled with genuine gratitude.
Her color was finally starting to return to normal.

Miss Brooks didn’t say anything, but she saw exactly what had just happened.
“Mommy…” A familiar voice called out. Ana instinctively looked up.
Her eyes met the girl’s, and the girl immediately started walking toward Ana. “It’s you!”
