Chapter 9
His assistant explained that when Sebastian found my divorce papers, he went absolutely ballistic. He immediately had the guy track down everywhere I’d been for the past few days. When he found out I hadn’t been to work and even had ended up in the hospital, he was so furious he couldn’t even
eat.
“When he couldn’t reach you, he drove around the entire city looking for you. The moment we got your flight information… that was the first time I’ve ever seen him cry.”
“He called me over to drink with him, kept asking me to think about any weird behavior you’d had lately. When he got really worked up, he’d just put his head down on the table like a little kid, saying you were heartless, saying you didn’t want him anymore… Honestly, I’ve worked for Mr. Hayes for
years, and I’ve never seen him like that.”
“That’s when I started digging deeper. I found Charlotte’s connection to everything, saw those posts… I swear on my life, Mr. Hayes going to that apartment complex had absolutely nothing to do with
her!”
“She staged those photos herself! She was the one behind that anonymous account! This whole thing
was her sick little scheme from start to finish–I’m not lying!”
The assistant was getting more and more worked up as he talked, his glasses practically sliding
down his nose with how animated he was getting.
“Then what was he doing there? And during that business trip–was Charlotte with him?”
At my pointed questions, the assistant’s lips moved for what felt like forever, his face turning red as he struggled with some internal battle. Finally he slumped against the wall like he’d been defeated: “I… I really can’t say… Mr. Hayes has to tell you himself…
But Mrs. Hayes, you have to believe me–he cares about you way more than you realize.
The second Charlotte’s bullshit started trending, he had me handle it. Those posts only stayed up because we were all swamped with work–who knew she’d be pulling her sneaky shit in the middle of the night…
Mr. Hayes already had people shut down all her projects. She’s definitely going to pay for what she

did!”
I was getting more confused by the minute, Look, I wasn’t trying to hash out all this drama while my husband was lying in a hospital bed. But since he’d brought it up, I wanted to know if the past two weeks of hell had all been in my head. And his answers were still frustratingly vague.
I didn’t choose to believe him–that was on me. But the fact remained that Sebastian was definitely hiding something from me.
Both the assistant and I were emotionally drained for completely different reasons, but right now all our energy was focused on the man fighting for his life in the ICU.
I didn’t want to sit alone in that sterile room, so I dozed off against the hallway wall. When dawn was just starting to break, I heard the doctor calling out: “The patient is awake! Family can go in
now!”
