Chapter 8
Look, I wasn’t born yesterday. Part of me wondered if this was just some elaborate manipulation tactic. I’d already decided that if Sebastian was sick enough to fake a car accident to get me back, I’d slap him twice, force him to sign the divorce papers, and walk away forever.
But then his parents called me on the way to the airport: [Sophia, please, we’re begging you. If Sebastian really did something wrong, we promise we’ll deal with him once he’s better. But when they wheeled him into surgery, he kept calling your name… there was so much blood, we’re terrified…]
Even my best friend, who’d been ready to murder Sebastian just hours ago, was now telling me to come home: [There was this massive storm around 3 AM. Your housekeeper said he grabbed his car keys and stormed out looking absolutely furious…]
[I talked to his assistant–apparently he went up to that winding mountain road, you know the one? Road was slick from the rain, he crashed right into the guardrail. Doctors aren’t sure how bad it is yet…]
[Sophia, this is life or death. You need to get back here.]
3 AM. Right after I’d sent that last angry text. My legs gave out completely and I collapsed into an airport chair, feeling like all the strength had been drained from my body.
When I was flying away from him, those few hours in the air had felt like nothing. Now every minute was pure torture–I wanted to storm into the cockpit and tell the pilot to floor it. When we finally landed and I got the text that his surgery was successful, I collapsed right there on the airport floor, sobbing with relief.
Back then, when I married Sebastian, my friend had joked, “Girl, you are totally screwed. This man is gonna be your downfall.”
I was pretty attractive, and before Sebastian, I’d had my fair share of guys chasing after me. I could’ve easily picked someone successful who’d worship the ground I walked on. But I just couldn’t bring myself to do it–none of them were Sebastian, so I had zero interest in dating them.
When Sebastian first asked me out, I’d already made peace with my decision. Even if it meant living in Charlotte’s shadow forever, I was willing to take that gamble.

Chapter 8
He was the guy I’d been head–over heels for all those years, so I was willing to risk everything for
him.
Snapping back to reality, my eyes were swollen from crying. When I got to the hospital, the hallway was surprisingly empty. Sebastian’s parents had been so shaken up that my mom had convinced them to go rest. Only his assistant and a hospital aide were still there.
The assistant looked at me like I was his guardian angel. This grown man was on the verge of tears: “Thank God you’re back… thank God you’re back…“,
