Chapter 12
After that night, somehow we’d fallen back into our old rhythm–but he was way clingier than before. He needed me to help him to the bathroom door, practically melting against me like he had no bones. During meals, he’d whine that his hands were too weak and make me feed him bite by bite. At night, he absolutely had to sleep next to me, basically turning the companion bed into his main residence.
The days were actually pretty sweet. He never brought up Charlotte, and I also never asked.
Honestly, I thought burying my head in the sand and just living day by day wasn’t the worst idea–might as well be happy while it lasted. But I couldn’t stop unwanted visitors from showing up.
That afternoon I mentioned wanting to go out for some bubble tea, and surprisingly Sebastian didn’t try to stop me. Halfway through, he even asked me to run to this mall in another district to pick something up. I didn’t think much of it–it was only a thirty–minute cab ride. But I was worried he’d
give me grief for being gone too long, so I rushed through my tea break.
What should’ve been a three–hour trip, I managed to finish in two. But when I got back to the
hospital, I just saw the absolute last person I wanted to see.
His assistant was standing guard by the door. Through the small window in the hospital room, I
could see Charlotte sitting at the foot of Sebastian’s bed with her back to me, while he was actually smiling at her.
My heart turned to ice. All the hope I’d been building up over these past few days just crumbled to dust. So that’s why he’d sent me on that shopping errand–Charlotte was coming to visit.
The assistant’s face went white when he saw me, but I was way past caring about his reaction. I pushed open the door and walked straight in.
I was done feeling sorry for myself, done keeping all the hurt bottled up inside. At the end of the day, life
goes on with or without anyone, right? And since everyone was here now, it was time to finally
get some answers.
I was ready to burn it all down and demand the truth, but I froze in place when I saw Charlotte’s
face was streaked with tears.

Chapter 12
Sebastian wasn’t surprised to see me at all. He just kept talking like I wasn’t even there: “You’re so talented at manipulating people–I’m sure you can find some bigger fish to help you fix your work problems. So why the hell are you bothering me? Aren’t you the queen of fake news? I haven’t even come after you yet, and you have the balls to show up here?”
He was smiling, but his tone was absolutely vicious–the kind that made your blood run cold.
Charlotte scrambled to her knees, her hair a complete mess, looking absolutely pathetic: “I was wrong! Please, I’m begging you to have mercy! I just got back to the country–I had no idea you and Sophia were married! I only did all this to get your attention. I thought maybe we could get back together…”
Sebastian glanced at me with a frown, looking suddenly panicked: “Didn’t I tell you when we broke up that I had zero feelings for you? Besides that one stupid kiss at your birthday party when everyone was egging me on, did I ever do anything else inappropriate? You wanted to publicly claim you dumped me, and I went along with it. You got plenty of benefits from dating me–why the hell would you think we had a chance of getting back together?
Have I contacted you once since you’ve been back? You stalked me, followed me in and out of my building, secretly tailed me to Houston, spread lies online, gave those cryptic interviews to reporters. Charlotte, I’m telling you right now–even if your father got down on his knees and begged me, I’m not letting this slide!”
He was getting more and more furious, and when he saw me standing there like a frozen statue, he raised his voice and yelled at me: “Are you gonna come over here or just stand there watching your husband die of rage?!
My ears were burning like I’d been caught doing something wrong. The second I got close, he grabbed my hand. When Charlotte and I made eye contact, I saw so many emotions in her gaze–anger, shock, but mostly defeat.
“I’m only saying this one last time–I have a wife. Stop living in your delusional fantasies. How could you ever compare to her?”
Before Charlotte could completely break down at his words, the assistant came in and escorted her out. Sebastian dragged me onto the bed, forcing me to hold him like he was some overgrown child while he sighed dramatically in my arms: “I figured seeing her would piss you off, so I didn’t call you back early. Even set up a voice recorder to prove my innocence. But you still walked in on the whole mess. Now that you’ve seen me tear her apart face–to–face, you can stop thinking I’m some cheating asshole, right?”
Everything had flipped so fast that all the emotions I’d been bottling up just… evaporated. I felt so

relieved I didn’t know how to handle it, so I just blurted out the first thing that came to mind:
“What about showing up at the airport in your fancy car to wait for her?”
Sebastian pinched my waist in annoyance–not hard enough to hurt, just enough to tickle–and said through gritted teeth: “How did I end up with such a stubborn wife?! I thought you were gonna ask me why I broke up with Charlotte in the first place.”
“Well, if you didn’t like her, why did you kiss her just because people were egging you on?”

He was speechless for a moment, then started acting like a pouty kid: “I’ll tell you later. Right now I need you to kiss me and make me feel better!”
