Chapter 11
Sebastian latched onto the doctor’s words like they were the holy gospel, using them to guilt me into staying in his room 24/7: “If you’re not here with me, I’m constantly worried you’re gonna run away again. The doctor said I need to avoid stress if I want to recover quickly.”
My mom had no clue about the Charlotte drama–she thought we’d just had some stupid fight. When she heard Sebastian’s request, she was practically applauding.
But what really made me cave was Sebastian’s parents.
They’d been so good to me over the years. When those two sweet old people looked at me with pleading eyes, I just couldn’t bring myself to say no.
The second our parents left, Sebastian turned into a complete tyrant. He treated me like his personal servant–constantly whining that his back hurt and needed massaging, or his shoulders were sore and needed rubbing.
By the end of the afternoon,.he’d worn me down so much I could barely speak.
The VIP room came with a separate bed for family members. After getting His Royal Highness settled for the night, I collapsed onto my pillow and was practically unconscious within seconds. But then his voice drifted over from the other bed: “Why are you sleeping way over there? Is my bed not big enough?”
I was too exhausted to deal with his bullshit, so I just ignored him and drifted off.
But sometime in the middle of the night, I felt like I was trapped in a furnace–burning up from head to toe. I instinctively tried to kick off the covers and accidentally hit Sebastian’s injured side, making him hiss in pain.
I jolted awake, immediately going still as a statue, curled up in his arms. “How did you get over here? The doctor said you shouldn’t be getting out of bed!”
Sebastian was frowning with this pitiful pout on his face: “I’ve never slept apart from my wife. I can’t sleep alone, okay?”
Something in my chest just cracked. In all our years of marriage, we’d had our fights and cold wars.

Chapter 11
The worst one was when I’d snuck off to sleep in the guest room, and he’d crawled in there in the middle of the night saying, “Couples are supposed to fight at the head of the bed and make up at the foot–but you just ditched the whole damn bed…”
Right now, Sebastian nuzzled the top of my head with his chin: “Don’t ever just disappear like that again, okay? At least tell me where you’re going. Even if you’re furious with me, you need to keep yourself safe…”
“Sophie, I don’t care if you believe me or not–I really do love you…”
He took my right hand and laced our fingers together. I had no idea if he was just half–asleep and rambling, but suddenly my chest felt like it was on fire.
