Chapter 10
When I pushed open the room door, my legs felt like they weighed a thousand pounds. The nurse had just removed his oxygen mask and helped him drink some water. Now he was propped up against the pillows, staring at me with this intense, burning gaze.
Thank God he’d never been one to cheap out on anything–always buying the best food, clothes, cars.
Otherwise this accident could’ve killed him.
He didn’t say a word as the assistant gently pushed me forward. My legs moved on autopilot until I
was standing right beside his bed. Only then did he finally speak, his voice completely wrecked, eyes
bloodshot:
“Thought you didn’t want me anymore? Changed your mind about coming back?”
Before walking in here, I’d sworn to myself that I’d keep it together. He was the patient, still recovering–I had to be the bigger person and go along with whatever he needed.
But the second I heard him say that, this wave of sadness and hurt hit me out of nowhere. The way he was staring at me made me feel so ashamed that I turned around, ready to walk right back out.
But Sebastian suddenly grabbed my waist before I could take a step, his arms locking around me like a vice, pulling me closer. Then he buried his face against my stomach: “Sophia, I fucking hate you… How can anyone be as heartless as you…”
I couldn’t speak. Because I could feel something warm and wet soaking through my shirt where his face was pressed against me.
“You accused me of cheating, said I didn’t love you–how could you do that to me? When other guys get hit with cheating rumors, their wives at least stick around to fight for them! You just… you just bailed without saying a word! Don’t you think I’m hurt? Don’t you think I’m devastated? I fucking
hate you…”
He was getting more and more worked up, crying like a broken child: “You’re not even hugging me… why won’t you hug me? Do I really have to die before you’ll…”
I couldn’t stand hearing those words. I wrapped my arms around his neck to stop him from finishing that sentence, my other hand gently stroking his hair.

Chapter 10
I couldn’t explain why, but seeing him like this made me feel like I was the one who’d screwed
everything up.
A doctor poked his head in after hearing the commotion: “The patient just woke up–family members need to keep him calm.”
