Chapter 4 We Break Up
Not bothering to waste another second on Theron and Johanna, Lizzie walked toward the hospital entrance on her crutches.
“You’re hurt?” Theron was stunned.
Then he quickly stepped forward and held her arm intimately.
The second he approached her, she smelt the overly sweet floral scent coming from him. She tilted her body in dis- gust and dodged from his hand.
Theron frowned. “I can explain, Lizzie. I thought you were fine because you weren’t hit.”

Lizzie was going to the archives room, so she had changed into her uniform. As she walked, the cast beneath her trousers was very obvious.
Obviously, she was hurt severely, which made Theron’s explanation pale and even ridiculous.
She was far from fine.
As she walked out stubbornly, Theron gazed at her back, filled with distress and guilt.
“Lizzie, have you been discharged? I’ll take you back to your dorm. We can talk there,” he said while reaching out to pick her up.
“No! Don’t touch me!”
“Hey, you can’t carry her like that!”
Lizzie’s voice and the nurse’s exclamation rang out at the same time.
But Theron assumed Lizzie was still throwing a tantrum and had already scooped her in his arms forcibly.
His movement jarred her wound. Her face instantly turned pale because of the pain, and she let out a muffled groan while gritting her teeth while a cold sweat broke out on her forehead.
Feeling something warm trickling down his fingers, Theron quickly put her down. For the first time, there was panic on his usually stern face. “I’m sorry, Lizzie. I thought you were just acting out of spite. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
The nurse had already rushed over. She pushed him aside and checked Lizzie’s wound.
Since Lizzie wore trousers, she draped Lizzie’s arm over her own shoulder and supported Lizzie as they walked back into the hospital.
She scolded Theron bluntly, “Ms. Trevino was severely injured and unconscious for three days. She’s just woken up from a coma. Do you really think you should do this to her? Exactly how ruthless are you?”

If it were in the past, she wouldn’t have dared to say this for fear of offending Theron, who was always stern and seri- ous. But today, she was indeed annoyed and threw caution to the wind.
She snapped, “Your fiancée was unconscious for three days. What did you do? You took care of another woman who had, what, a superficial wound? If you had brought her here any later, her wound could have healed on its own! You stayed by her side and followed her everywhere when she came to change her bandages. I thought she was Ms. Trevi-
no!”
She was so moved by his devotion, yet it turned out he was devoted to another woman. It was so infuriating!
The nurse happened to vent Lizzie’s anger, and she couldn’t help but curve her lips, feeling great, though her face was still ghastly pale.
However, in the next second, the nurse turned to her. “And you! Didn’t I tell you to stay in bed? Why didn’t you listen to me? You didn’t even make it to the entrance! See what you’ve done to yourself?”
Being scolded unexpectedly made Lizzie pout.
Theron walked over to her. This time, he didn’t try to forcibly pick her up. Instead, he did as the nurse had done, draped Lizzie’s arm over his shoulder, supported her body, and helped her walk forward gently, his every movement showing how considerate and meticulous he was.
Lizzie didn’t push him away. Her wound was the priority now.
Thinking her attitude had softened, Theron secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
She sat on the bed in the emergency room, and only then did he see that one of her trouser legs was already soaked with blood.
Upon seeing this, the doctor quickly cut open her trouser leg with a pair of scissors.
The nurse pushed Theron out while pulling the curtain to make sure no one could see inside.
Theron only caught a glimpse of Lizzie’s wound, but it was horrifying enough to break his heart.
He thought, “I regret it so much. Why didn’t I look back that day?
“Lizzie has everything to be mad. After her wound is dealt with, I’ll stay by her side and take care of her.”
Reopened wounds were very difficult to treat. Even with anesthesia, Lizzie still felt intense pain during the process, and beads of sweat covered her forehead.
Despite the great pain, she bit her lip hard, stubbornly refusing to let out a sound. However, she still couldn’t help but let out a muffled groan when the pain became unbearable.
Theron on the other side of the curtain heard her groan. He couldn’t help but step forward but then stopped.
A trace of guilt flashed across his eyes as he turned to say something to the nurse aside.
She nodded and left. Soon, she came back with a wheelchair.
Just then, the curtain was slowly drawn back, and Lizzie’s bloodless face came into Theron’s view.

A few strands of sweat–soaked hair clung to her cheeks.

Theron’s heart ached as he quickly strode forward. Seeing her getting out of bed with difficulty, he immediately held her shoulders with one hand while bracing under her armpit with the other.
“Lizzie,” he said, his voice gentle, his eyes filled with concern for her, “lean on me entirely. Let me help you, OK? Be careful–don’t aggravate the wound.”
Lizzie didn’t turn down his help because she was in a wounded state indeed.
The wheelchair would be of great help. It was what Theron owed her, and she deserved to be treated with care.
With his help, she slowly moved to the wheelchair.
Assuming she was no longer mad at him, Theron smiled, his eyes lighting up with surprise. He bent down to adjust the wheelchair’s footrests with even gentler movements.
Appearing perfectly thoughtful, he said to the nurse, “I have training exercises tomorrow, so I won’t be able to look after Lizzie. Given her condition, is it possible to arrange a first–floor ward for her? It’ll be so much easier for her.”
The nurse was touched. She thought, “Perhaps Mr. Howland is one of those guys who are nice to every woman- they’re gentle and considerate by nature. Who knows? Maybe he and Ms. Trevino had a row, and the others therefore got him wrong.”
“Alright…” She was about to agree.
Just then, Lizzie’s calm, cold voice rang out, cutting her off. “I’m not your fiancée anymore. We broke up already.”
Theron frowned slightly but still tried to be patient. “Lizzie, I know you’re still upset about Johanna. I admit it was my fault that day for leaving you behind. As for the job… Johanna needs it more than you do. It’ll be fine even if you’re unemployed. We’ll get married, and I’ll support you.”
He said this gently, and the serious expression on his face stabbed hard into Lizzie’s heart like a sharp knife.
The corner of her mouth twitched involuntarily as a flash of pain flickered in her eyes.
She thought, “Get married? Support me?
“Our marriage is the biggest joke of my life!
“I still remember vividly what happened in my past light. The date on his marriage certificate with Johanna is the very day I was reborn!
“He’s already got ready to marry Johanna.”
Oblivious to the change in her expression, Theron continued, “You’ll have everything you need for life and won’t have to worry about anything ever again. And of course, you won’t need to stay up late for research anymore.”
He sounded so gentle and seemed so sincere, seeming that he had seriously planned their future together,
Lizzie thought, “Fuck you, you lying piece of shit!”
