Early in the morning, out of habit, I reached over to the space next to me and realized Caleb wasn’t there.
I sat up and headed downstairs, where I immediately spotted Caleb and John at the front door, causing me to stop in my tracks.
John, with his eyes red, yelled, “Diana is my
wife!”
Caleb stared at him icily and replied, “Not anymore. You’re not worthy of being her husband!”
John retorted, “I am her husband. Caleb, don’t even think about taking her from me!”

Caleb responded, “You have no right to say that, John. You abandoned her in the fire for Kelsie. When Kelsie injured her head, all you said was to let it slide.”
Caleb continued, “Kelsie’s fall down the stairs was her own doing. Without even questioning, you blamed Diana and sided with the Meane family to bully her, forcing her to kneel and apologize!”
He concluded, “You’re not a true husband at all! Leave her life and never come back.”
John shook his head firmly. “I’m not leaving. I’m staying here until Diana comes out.”
Caleb grabbed John by the collar and delivered a hard punch to his face.
“If you don’t leave, I’ll beat you to a pulp!”
Blood trickled from the corner of John’s mouth, but he remained unresponsive.
“Caleb, you can keep hitting me. I won’t retaliate, as long as you return her to me.”
He believed that by admitting his fault and enduring the beating, he could win her back.
Caleb hit him again.
“Stop dreaming. She’s not going back with you.”
John lost his composure and yelled, “Diana is mine. She’s mine! Please, return her to me!”
Caleb let go and replied, “John, Diana doesn’t belong to anyone. She is her own person.
“You don’t love her at all. You only love yourself. Stop pretending to care!”
Instinctively, John refuted, “No, I do love her!”
Caleb mocked him, “If you truly loved her, you wouldn’t have impersonated your younger brother and stayed with Kelsie while she was heartbroken!”

John insisted, “I did it for my younger brother. If I hadn’t asked him to come with me to buy a gift, he wouldn’t have died. It’s my responsibility to look after Kelsie for him.”
Caleb let out a mocking laugh.
“You helped him by having an affair with his wife. Do you think he could rest peacefully if he knew?”
John’s face turned ashen.
Initially, he hadn’t intended to get involved with Kelsie, but how could a couple not be close? So he maintained the facade.
Caleb went on, “You made Diana believe you were dead, causing her to endure the agony of losing you every day for the sake of another woman. Do you really think you’re admirable?
“John, you’re revolting!
“I’m telling you, you’ve not only betrayed Diana but also your younger brother!”

John collapsed to the floor as if overwhelmed by intense pain.
Caleb walked back into the room and seemed a bit surprised to see me there.
His voice grew tense as he spoke, “Diana, you heard all of that… You’re not upset, are you?”
I could tell he was concerned that his harsh words to John might upset me. Instead, I couldn’t help but laugh.
I moved closer and wrapped my arm around his. “Why would I be upset? You did an excellent job reprimanding him. I feel like applauding you.”
Caleb was momentarily taken aback. “You startled me. I thought you’d be upset.”
I pressed a kiss to his cheek.
“Why would I be mad at you over someone who isn’t important?
“If he’s so fond of being with Kelsie, then let him be with her forever. I don’t care! All I want now is to be with you!”
Caleb grinned and embraced me warmly.
“Tomorrow, I’m taking you somewhere special. I’ve got a surprise for you.”
His smile was enigmatic, and I was genuinely intrigued about what the surprise might be.
