Chapter 9
Brianna’s voice kept coming, but Howard seemed like he couldn’t hear anything, completely lost in his own world.
“Howard, I was talking to you, are you listening?”
Noticing her son’s daydreaming, Brianna waved her hand in front of him, but he remained oblivious, only muttering a name repeatedly, “Grete, Grete…”
The words “Grete” fell into Brianna’s ears, and she frowned slightly, with a hint of disdain in her eyes.
A poor girl without a family background, she climbed up the Wiggins family tree only because Howard lost his memory, and thus entered the upper class circle. But her humble origins couldn’t be hidden just by wearing designer clothes.
She and Howard were never meant to be together, but at least she had some self-awareness and didn’t keep bothering Howard.
Thinking about it, Brianna glanced at the messy living room, checked the time, and then, as if suddenly realizing something, raised her eyebrows and looked at Howard with a hint of satisfaction in her eyes.
“She left? Well, she has some sense of timing. Her leaving works out perfectly. I’ll talk to the Wiggins family about the wedding date when I get back.”
But I don’t know which word touched Howard’s nerve, his face suddenly changed, “No, it can’t be! How could she leave me! She clearly…”
She clearly loved him.
Brianna saw him so confident, couldn’t help but snort, “What’s impossible? She didn’t hesitate to take that fifty million back then.”
Fifty million.
Howard quickly caught onto those three words, he looked up at Brianna in disbelief.
“What did you say? Fifty million?!”
Brianna’s voice suddenly paused, with a hint of annoyance in her eyes, but quickly returned to normal.
Before, I kept it from Howard because I was worried that he wouldn’t be willing to part with Gretchen if he found out. But now she’s already left, so even if he knows, it won’t change anything. He might even see her true colors and realize she’s just a money-hungry woman. Once he knows that Gretchen stayed for the money, he won’t have any lingering feelings for her.
Thinking like this, Brianna just spilled the beans about what happened not long ago without any burden.
“I saw her a week ago, gave her fifty million, told her to leave you. I thought she would argue with me a bit, whether she thought the money was too little or wanted to get more from you. But I didn’t expect her to take the check so decisively, agreeing to leave within a week. Now, counting the time, it’s almost up.”
Howard never thought it would be this answer.
Tears welled up in his eyes, a sour feeling made him blink constantly, a suffocating pain came from his chest, making it heave violently. Howard gritted his teeth, unwilling to believe Brianna’s words, his eyes red, looking at her, seeking one last confirmation.
“It was you who forced her to leave, she didn’t leave willingly, right?”
But he was destined to be disappointed. Brianna shook her head, looking indifferent, “I didn’t lie to you, she did take the

money and wanted to leave on her own.”
“Just a money-minded woman, nothing worth worrying about. You’re going to marry Veronica soon, so you should focus more
on her.”
Out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of the phone, and it was like grabbing a lifeline. He hurriedly picked up the phone, found the number he had been deliberately ignoring for a long time in the contacts, and dialed it.
The long busy tone rang, and finally it was ruthlessly cut off by a voiceless female voice.
When he tried calling again, he couldn’t get through at all.
He couldn’t believe his eyes as he stared at the screen where the call was automatically disconnected. It was like he was thinking, “Am I blocked?”
Howard forgot when Brianna left. He stubbornly sat in the living room, staring straight at the direction of the door. In a daze, he seemed to really see another door being pushed open. Gretchen walked in from outside as usual, muttering about what happened today, “Howard, you have no idea what happened when I went to work part-time today. That client was so weird…”
He subconsciously reached out to grab her, but his hand grabbed nothing.
The scene in front of me slowly faded away, but the sound still seems to be echoing in my ears.
He only realized afterwards that it was all an illusion.
