On her son’s birthday, Caroline Warren saw an Instagram post that made her blood run cold.
In the post, her ex–bestie, Michelle Adams, snuggled up with a
guy.
They wrapped their arms around a little boy. And the caption read: [Aren’t we a cute family of three?]
Caroline’s heart sank.
If the people in the picture were random strangers, she would have sent her heartfelt congrats.
Too bad for her, that man was her husband, Caleb Martin. And the kid was Dominic Martin, the son she’d gone through hell to bring into the world.
With shaky fingers, Caroline zoomed in on the photo, only to see their faces lit up with pure happiness and joy.
Reluctance was nowhere to be seen, not even the slightest.
At the time, the cake on the table had already melted into a sorry mess, and the carefully prepared dishes all turned cold, just like Caroline’s heart.
Dominic was supposed to get out of kindergarten at 3:30 PM.

Yet, he and his dad still hadn’t returned now that four hours and thirty minutes had passed.
She couldn’t reach them on the phone, and the messages she sent were left unread.
Apparently, the father and son were way too busy celebrating with Michelle. They had long forgotten about Caroline.
Even Dominic had chosen Michelle over her, without even knowing it.
Like father, like son. Dominic sure has the same taste in people as Caleb.
At the thought, Caroline found herself numb.
They disappointed her.
Again.
Emotionlessly, she typed a comment under the post: [You sure
are.]
Then she took a screenshot, saved it, and posted it on her own Instagram account with the caption: [You truly look like a family with my husband and son.]

than Caroline could bear.

Every Instagram post she made was aimed at stinging Caroline.
This time, though, Caroline wanted their mutual friends to see how despicable and shameless Michelle was.
In no time, Michelle deleted the post.
Seeing this, Caroline let out a sneer.
She stood up and told the maid, “Just toss it all in the garbage.”
The food had gone cold, losing its former warmth and flavor, much like her marriage–bland and unappetizing.
Caroline figured, since she couldn’t keep it anyway, why not just let it all go?
Then she went upstairs.
After taking a shower, Caroline stepped out of the bathroom.
Suddenly, she heard hasty footsteps outside. Before she knew it, the door was flung open.
Caleb stormed in, his face gloomy. He roughly grabbed her wrist and questioned, “Why do you have to pick on Michelle when she’s finally getting better?”

Right now, Caleb, her husband, felt like a total stranger to her. They’d been living under the same roof for six years, though.
“Me, picking on her?” Caroline scoffed. “She started it! Have you forgotten what you promised me yesterday?”
She held up her phone, showing the chat log where Caleb had promised to be home to celebrate their son’s birthday.
A hint of guilt flashed across his face. His tone softened as he said, “It happened all of a sudden. I forgot to notify you. But you shouldn’t have gone after Michelle like that!“.
“Notify me?” She arched an eyebrow. “Is that what you call it? That’s what you tell your employees. I’m your wife, for god’s sake. Don’t mix things up.”
In Caleb’s mind, even if Michelle had started it, Caroline wasn’t supposed to fight back. Instead, she should keep biting her tongue, just like she always did.
“Mom, you’re such a meanie! You made Ms. Adams cry! It’s all your fault! You’ve messed up their lives. Why can’t you just leave her alone?” Dominic’s voice rang out from the doorway.
He was the spitting image of his father, stunningly good–looking. They even shared the same accusing tone.
Caroline’s heart jolted a bit, her eyes wide in shock as she spun around to face Caleb. “Is that what you told Dominic?”

Frowning, Caleb scowled in annoyance. “Isn’t Dominic right? You’re mad because we celebrated with Michelle. She ends up like this all thanks to you. Dominic and I are just trying to make up for your sins!”
Six years back, the Adams Group got wrapped up in a tax–fraud scandal and went bankrupt overnight.
Michelle’s parents couldn’t take the blow and took their own lives. Her brother, Matthew Adams, was chased by debt collectors and fell off the building right in front of her.
Since then, Michelle had suffered from severe mental problems.
Caroline was sponsored by the Martin family back then.
Rumors swirled around the school that she tipped off the debt collectors about Matthew, which pushed him to his tragic end.
At that time, Caleb had a rough time going through with it, with his good buddy Matthew gone and his girlfriend Michelle in a
mess.
Worse still, Caroline even drugged his drink, leading to a one–night stand with him.
Therefore, in his eyes, Caroline was the source of all those miscrics.

After the whole ordeal, Caleb couldn’t face Michelle anymore.
He had no choice but to marry Caroline when his grandfather, Walter Martin, pushed him into it.
But Caleb had one condition–Walter had to pay off the Adams family’s debt and send Michelle abroad for top–notch psychological treatment.
On their wedding night, Caleb squeezed Caroline’s neck hard and shoved her onto the bed. His voice dripped with bitterness, as he demanded to know why she’d caused Matthew’s death and targeted the Adams family.
No matter how hard Caroline tried to explain, Caleb didn’t believe her.
And with the surveillance footage having gone missing out of the blue, she became the scapegoat for the whole tragedy.
From that moment on, she was labeled a sinner in everyone’s
eyes.
After Caroline gave birth, Caleb’s mother, Brianna Martin, snatched Dominic away. She raised the boy and constantly bad–mouthed Caroline to him.
By the time Dominic turned three, he had finally come back to Caroline, but it had only been a year since then.

The grudges sown in him had taken root, and he hated Caroline just as Caleb did.
Caroline went all out to be the best wife and mother, hoping that one day Caleb and Dominic would see what she really was.
But in the end, she just became the butt of everyone’s jokes.
Six years had gone by, and it was time for Caroline to wake up from this nightmare.
Taking a deep breath, she picked up the divorce papers lying on her bedside table, ready to hand them to Caleb. But just as she was about to speak, his phone rang.
He slapped her hand away and then answered the call.
The next second, his face turned as cold as ice.
“Because of you, Michelle tried to kill herself at home! If anything happens to her today, you’re a goner too!” He snapped.
Hearing that, Dominic stared daggers at Caroline and said to his dad, “Dad, you should just divorce Mom! Then, Ms. Adams can be my new mom!”
Shooting a look of disgust at Caroline, Caleb quickly left with Dominic.
Their words kept ringing in Caroline’s cars. She let out a low,
