Chapter 6
My finger hovered over the power button.
Lucian saw me hesitate. He glanced at the screen, and his eyes turned red.
He tugged on my sleeve and whispered,
“Mom.. it’s time to go.”
I ran my hand over his hair, proud of how suddenly he’d grown up.
Back at the office, Damien frowned at the “phone shutting down” banner on his screen.
Last night he’d rushed over in a panic-
Only to find Dorian wasn’t sick at all.
Just cranky and hungry for KFC.
He thought of Lucian, who he’d left behind, and guilt hit him like a brick.
Dorian had loved the meal.
Maybe if he took Lucian out for some chicken today, he’d smile too…
“Damien?”
Isolde’s voice snapped him out of it.
He looked over.
She was wearing a tight, low–cut dress that hugged her figure.
Seraphina always dressed modestly, even though her body was just as good.
She never wore anything like this.
Isolde noticed his blank stare and mistook it for interest.

She leaned in, smiling flirtatiously.
“The client’s here. So are the shareholders.”
“I’ll go in with you, okay?”
Her perfume hit him like a wall. He sneezed–hard.
Damien was allergic to perfume.
When I found out, I threw all mine away and even switched my shampoo.
But Isolde, his ex–fiancée, never cared enough to remember.
Damien took a step back, pulling away, then stood and headed for the meeting room.
He’d promised to help Isolde get back to work–today was the day to make that public.
And show the world she had his support.
[solde, satisfied, clicked along behind him in her heels.
Inside, everyone had been gossiping about the “hot secretary” they’d seen earlier.
But the second Damien walked in, the room fell dead silent.
He sat down and flipped open the folder in front of him-
One look, and his brow tightened.
Everyone else glanced at their copies and their faces shifted too.
Every single contract had been scribbled on with markers.
Crooked little “Approved” stamps in crayon–clearly a kid’s writing.
Damien slammed his folder down.
“Who prepared these? Do you people not have basic job skills?”
The department heads exchanged awkward glances.

They had sent the files to the executive office-
The secretary printed them. It wasn’t their fault.
Damien’s expression darkened as he scanned the table.
“Get Seraphina in here!”
Nathaniel, the director, hesitated.
‘Damien… Seraphina…”
Before he could finish, the client slammed the contract down
If this is how your company does business, we’re done.”
Everyone looked.
Someone had drawn a giant turtle over the client’s name, along with some pretty nasty comments.
Damien’s face turned to stone.
Je never imagined the two people he trusted most could screw things up this badly.
solde looked ready to cry.
I’m so sorry, I didn’t know-”
The client snapped,
Who even are you?”
I’m talking to Damien, not some wannabe trophy wife!”
Damien rubbed his temples and stood up.
‘My apologies,”
“This was my oversight.”
I’ll have new contracts printed immediately.”

“And as an apology, we’re willing to cut our price by three percent.”
The client paused, weighing his pride against the discount.
Isolde actually started crying.
Full–on damsel–in–distress, tears–and–all sobbing.
Everyone at the table frowned.
In this business, looks only got you so far.
They cared about competence.
Seraphina used to be both.
Smart, reliable, and easy to work with.
No one understood why Damien would let someone like her go just to bring in… this.
After the meeting, Isolde looked up at Damien with red, watery eyes.
“I’m sorry, Damien.”
“I didn’t think it’d go so badly. What should I do now?”
He almost comforted her.
But when he looked into those big, helpless eyes, he froze.
Seraphina never looked at him like that.
She was proud.
She did everything with precision.
Even the toughest problems, she’d handle with ease.
Not like Isolde-
Crying and dumping every mess in his lap.

If today had been Seraphina..
No. It wouldn’t have happened.
She was careful.
Lancian, too. That boy never caused trouble.
The ache in his heart turned cold.
He looked at Isolde again, face unreadable.
“You should go. I’ll handle the rest.
She looked stunned.
“Damien…”
“Out.”
His tone left no room for argument.
Biting her lip, she turned and walked out, still unwilling to give up.
