Chapter 2
It’s Friday.
The day she comes back.
Damien’s one true love.
They dated all through college, even got engaged after graduation.
But a month before the wedding, Isolde fell for some French guy and ran off to Paris.
She left Damien like he was nothing.
He was wrecked for a long time.
And that’s when I came in–his assistant.
One drunken night led to a pregnancy.
And I became his secret wife.
The one he never loved.
The one whose child he never wanted.
I printed the divorce papers I drafted last night.
Then started writing up my resignation letter.
Unlike Lucian, I wasn’t holding on to any dreams.
I’d lived with Damien’s coldness long enough.
Seven years was more than enough to crush every fantasy I ever had.
“Seraphina, you’re really quitting?”
One of my coworkers glanced at my screen and lowered her voice.

I smiled, already prepared with my cover story.
“Yeah… Lucian’s dad is overseas.
We’re planning to join him and finally live together as a family.”
She nodded.
“That’s probably for the best.
It’s been hard raising a kid on your own.”
Then she said,
“You know, we always thought you were a single mom.”
I gave a laugh.
Bitter and hollow.
I wasn’t a single mom.
But honestly, that would’ve been easier.
My eyes started to burn.
I forced a smile, like I always did.
Didn’t let anyone see.
After handing in my resignation, Damien walked in-
with her.
She led the way, looking soft and lovely.
He followed like she hung the moon.
Eyes never leaving her.

My coworker nudged me, whispering,
“Looks like our Mr. Blackwood finally thawed out, huh?”
I managed a laugh.
But in my heart, it was raining.
So love really does bloom…
Just not for me.
Even if I waited a lifetime,
Damien would never look at me like that.
As they passed by, I couldn’t stop myself-
“Da-”
He turned and cut me off with a cold glare.
“Seraphina. Something you need?”
His tone was distant.
And full of warning.
A reminder of my place.
I dropped my eyes and swallowed hard.
“Sorry, Damien.”
He didn’t even acknowledge me.
Just looked right back at her.
Like she was the only person in the room.

That’s my husband.
The father of my child.
Fawning over another woman-
right in front of me.
It hurt.
But it also made things clear.
I was going to tell him I was leaving.
But now… what’s the point?
He never cared anyway.
Not about me.
Not about our son.
Not about this hollow shell of a marriage.
Back at my desk, my smartwatch buzzed.
It was Lucian.
“Mom, there’s a parent meeting tonight. School let out early.
Uncle Victor picked me up–he’s bringing me to you.”
I stood up, worried.
And then I saw it.
Damien, tucking her hair behind her ear.
Smiling. Soft. Tender.

A few feet away.
Lucian stood by the elevator, backpack on.
He stared at them, wide–eyed.
Watching his father be gentle with a stranger.
So tender.
So patient.
The kind of love we’d never been given,
I rushed over, about to grab Lucian-
but Damien had already seen him.
He stiffened.
Dropped his hand from her hair.
But then he stepped in front of her protectively.
and walked right past our son.
Like Lucian wasn’t even there.
Like he didn’t exist.
My chest ached.
I quickly led Lucian back to my desk.
He didn’t say a word.
Just pulled out his homework and started writing.
Tears soaked the page.

“Mom,” he whispered, “Was that Uncle Damien’s favorite person?”
I couldn’t answer.
I just nodded through the tears.
Lucian didn’t ask anything else.
He just kept writing.
Quiet. Heartbroken.
I wrapped my arms around him.
He’s my whole world.
And Damien?
You’ve only got two chances left.
