Chapter 6
“Her legs are shattered, multiple fractures. She probably won’t ever stand again, Mr. Palmer. And there’s more…”
Chris’s eyes were misty. He didn’t want to hear the rest.
But still, he forced out the question, voice bitter and low.
“What else?”
“She was pregnant before. And during that time, she was subjected to intense sexual trau- ma… Her uterus has prolapsed. Her physical and mental state are both extremely fragile, she’s basically in a state of total collapse.”
Chris couldn’t listen anymore. His hands trembled as he flipped through the medical report, trying to make sense of it.
He couldn’t stop replaying it in his mind, back then, he’d accused Willette of lying. Over and
over.
But now the results made everything painfully clear.
She had been pregnant, she had been scared, and he hadn’t believed her.
He let out a raw, agonized scream. “Ahhh!”
What kind of monster had he been?
That was his first child. Their child, his and Willette’s.
“I’m begging you… Please… Is there any way to bring her back? To restore her mind?”
It was the first time Chris had ever begged for anything.
Even when his own father beat him so badly he broke three ribs, he hadn’t begged then.

But now, for Willette… he let go of his pride.
Faced with this version of Chris, the doctor was clearly caught off guard.

“Once the patient recovers from surgery, you might try bringing her to familiar places. It could help spark some memories, maybe even some emotional response,” he said cautiously.
That night, an exhausted Chris brought Willette–now post–surgery–back to the villa.
Lillian had been watching a jungle adventure movie, laughing as the main character was chased by a tiger. But the moment she saw Willette, she froze.
“Chris, why’d you bring her back here?”
Chris felt a flicker of anger at the question, but he still answered calmly.
a
“Lillian, she lived with me for eight years. This is her home, too. The doctor suggested that familiar surroundings might help her regain her memory and stabilize her mental state.”
Lillian bit her lip, clearly displeased.
“But all of Willette’s stuff is gone.”
Chris fell silent for a moment.
That’s right. Back when he and Lillian were setting up the wedding suite, he’d ordered every- thing of Willette’s to be thrown out.
Now, what familiar things were even left?
Nothing. Just an empty shell of what used to be.
“I’ll help show Willette around then,” Lillian offered as if nothing was wrong.
She stepped behind Willette’s wheelchair and began pushing her.
Pointing toward one of the rooms, she leaned down and said sweetly to me, as I sat there blankly, lost in thought, “This was your old room, Willette. But now, it’s the baby room for Chris and me. So be careful not to get the rooms mixed up, okay?”
