Chapter 7
Clarissa thought it was too absurd; she felt that there couldn’t possibly be such a good deal in this
world.
She cautiously probed, “Then… what’s the downside?”
“The downside? Probably that you’ll be marrying someone you don’t like.”
Marrying someone you don’t like.
Clarissa didn’t know what came to mind, but she lowered her eyes, her long eyelashes trembling slightly.
After a brief silence, Theodore asked her, “You seem reluctant. Is it because you still have hopes for love that you don’t want to marry someone you don’t like?”
“No,” Clarissa blurted out.
No hope left, none at all. Theodore’s words were like a sharp thorn, piercing her heart.
The man’s eyes darkened slightly, a fleeting sadness passing through them.
Clarissa didn’t catch Theodore’s subtle change. She finally looked up, her gaze toward Theodore seeming to carry a kind of desperate determination.
“Mr. Ashford, you’re not drunk, are you?”
“I’m perfectly sober,” Theodore said.
His emotions were always so stable. In the three years since she joined the company, Clarissa had never seen him lose control in public; everything seemed to be within his
grasp.
“I’m still worried you’ll feel shortchanged, or regret it. Why don’t we not get the marriage certificate for now, and just try first…”
Before Clarissa could finish, Theodore interrupted her: “I don’t have that kind of patience.”

Theodore strode toward his office, his eyes signaling Clarissa to follow.
Clarissa glanced around cautiously, following him into the office like a guilty thief.
The spacious office, several hundred square meters, was decorated in a grand, vintage style.
The man tossed his coat onto the sofa, walked to the desk, bent down to open a drawer, and took out a contract, handing it to Clarissa.
Clarissa looked closely–it was a prenuptial agreement!
He actually kept such a thing ready in his office?
It seemed he really was in a hurry to have a marriage to appease his family. If not her, it could have been someone else.
Perhaps today someone else might have pressed the wrong elevator button, but as long as they met his criteria for a marriage partner, he would have made the same proposal. Clarissa speculated silently.
“I’ll give you one more chante to think it over carefully. If you have no objections to the agreement, sign it today, and we’ll go get the marriage certificate tomorrow morning.”
Clarissa listened to Theodore’s words and carefully read through the agreement.
The content of the agreement was consistent with what he had said verbally.
Clarissa imperceptibly slowed her breathing, trying to calm herself down.
Just then, the phone clutched in her palm vibrated again.
Clarissa thought it might be her aunt calling to scold her again, but when she saw the caller ID, it was Brady.
Clarissa instinctively looked up at Theodore standing in front of her.
His gaze was also on her, casual, relaxed, and completely at ease.
It was that steady gaze that calmed Clarissa’s tense nerves.

In front of him, she decisively hung up the call and then blocked and deleted the number.
Not just that number–she quickly operated her phone, deleting everything related to Brady clean from her phone.
Even so, the sordid conversations between Brady and his friends echoed repeatedly in her ears.
Including Theodore’s recent question-
“Is it because you still have hopes for love?”
Eight years. A heart doesn’t die in an instant.
Clarissa laughed self–mockingly, “Mr. Ashford’s conditions are too tempting. I’ve made up my mind.”
Under Theodore’s gaze, Clarissa signed her name on the agreement.
“But if we divorce, I won’t ask for half your assets either. Just… give me an apartment.”
In Los Angeles, where real estate was extremely valuable, even an ordinary three–bedroom
apartment would cost at least five million to start, which was enough for Clarissa.
The vast office fell silent for a moment.
Clarissa closed the agreement and put it back on the table, hesitantly saying to Theodore: “So, here’s to a pleasant cooperation… Mr. Ashford.”
