Chapter 15
Clarissa wasn’t quite sure what the man meant, so she cautiously said: “Alright, in the future I’ll also
report my whereabouts to you, Mr. Ashford. Don’t worry, during our marriage agreement period, I
won’t act recklessly.”
Theodore thought to himself that her professional ethics were truly commendable.
After a moment of silence, he moved past her topic without addressing it, “I have nothing else. Get
st early, good night.”
d night.”
Looking at the darkened phone screen, Theodore helplessly curved the corner of his mouth.
From last night until now, he hadn’t closed his eyes once.
He couldn’t sleep.
It was like having a glass of slightly intoxicating wine–not completely drunk, but not completely
sober either; part rational, part seemingly out of control.
The next day.
Clarissa returned to her own apartment, planning to pack her things and move completely to
Theodore’s place.
Clarissa was someone who liked to declutter. As she packed, she decisively threw away old items
she no longer needed.
After finishing the living room, she went to the study to organize and pack her computer and some
work materials.
As she looked up, her gaze fell on a thick, slightly yellowed notebook on the bookshelf.

Clarissa took it and flipped it open.
It was her chemistry notebook. On the first page of the notebook, she had neatly written a line:
[My goal: Oxford University!]
When Clarissa was in high school, her academic performance was very uneven, especially in chemistry, where she performed poorly.
But if she wanted to get into a top institution like Oxford, no subject could be weak.
She flipped through the densely written notes, seemingly transported back to those sleepless nights of solving problems while preparing application materials, busy to the point of nearly collapsing.
That sense of pressure, even now when she recalled it, made Clarissa feel suffocated.
Her movements were slow and stiff as she turned the pages one by one.
When she reached the twenty–fifth page, among a bunch of chemical equations, she found a name.
That name had been deliberately placed in an inconspicuous corner, written very small, as if afraid of being discovered.
Yet it was still immediately noticeable to her years later.
Clarissa calmly stared at that name for a few seconds.
Then, she closed the notebook and threw it into a black garbage bag.
Clarissa spent two hours packing three suitcases, which seemed to be all of her belongings.
She then called a moving company to transport her things to Theodore’s place.
She was very efficient, quickly organizing her things in the new home by herself. In less than half a day, the moving process was complete.
Just as she sat down to rest for a moment, her phone rang.
Clarissa looked down at the caller ID and found it was an unknown number that she hadn’t saved.

She answered the phone, put it to her ear, and calmly asked: “Hello, who is this?”
The other party remained silent for a moment.
Clarissa frowned in confusion and asked again, “Hello, this is Clarissa Langley. Who’s calling?”
“It’s me.”
Clarissa paused.
She lowered her eyes without responding.
“Not only did you block my number, but you also deleted me from WhatsApp?” The man’s voice on
the phone was lazy, his tone characteristically nonchalant.
“We’re done,” Clarissa simply said.
Strictly speaking, they had never even begun.
Her consistent calmness stirred something unusual in Brady’s heart on the other end of the phone.
“Are you sure you want to end this?”
“What else?” Clarissa asked in return. “You’ve already won your bet, and my existence has no
meaning to you anymore.”
“But Clarissa, not once… has a woman been the first to say it’s over with me.”
Clarissa’s tone was flat, “Then let me be the first.”
Brady laughed softly, “I don’t have that intention.”
Clarissa felt a blockage in her chest. If it wasn’t up to her to say when it began, and it wasn’t up to her
to say when it ended, was she just meant to be played with by him?
