“Only useless people would be content to waste their lives in small cities, living aimlessly without any ambition!” Christopher said disdainfully. “I despise that kind of person the most!”
“Is that how you see me?” I looked at him coldly.
“I don’t want you to become that kind of person!” Christopher declared righteously.
He added, “I never should have chosen to go to college with you in Texas back then–it wasted four whole years of my life! I should have come to New York with Madison from the start!”
Before high school graduation, Madison had confessed her feelings to Christopher, but he had rejected her. He and I had already fallen in love over time.
But ever since he had accompanied me to apply to Texas universities, he had said things like this many times over the years.
