Chapter 17
After all these years, his features were still the ones I was most familiar with. Yet now, he had become someone so unfamiliar that I could hardly recognize him.
Could a person truly change so much? Or had I never really known him at all?
“Edward, it was the past. I’ve completely let go and started a new life.”
I lifted my hand and showed him the matching couple’s ring on my finger. You see this? My wedding ring is still on. There’s no possibility between us anymore. Please, don’t bother me again.”
Proud as Edward was, this was the first time in all these years I saw such an expression on his
face.
Guilt and humility were written all over it.
He was the only heir of the Hall Family, born at the top of the pyramid. Yet now, he looked utterly defeated.
It had always been others begging him, never the other way around. But now, standing in front of me, he looked helpless, like a lost child.
“Eliza, I know I came too late… but please, give me one more chance to make things right…”
“What use is it to know you were wrong?” I said coldly. “The damage has already been done. Dc you think your apology can erase the pain of the past?”
I stared hard at Edward, memories flashing through my mind of how he had hurt me over and over again for Olive’s sake.
My heart clenched again and again, those old wounds starting to throb with pain once more.
“Yes, you remembered I’m allergic to peanuts. But what did you do with that knowledge? You fec me peanuts yourself!”
“Other than that, do you know what I like to eat? What kind of flowers do I love? Do you even know the little details of them? All your so–called love was nothing more than a condescending display of affection.”
With every word I spoke, a deeper look of pained confusion appeared on Edward’s face.
During all those years I loved him deeply, I had hidden all my sharp edges for his sake, cooked for him with my own hands, memorized every one of his preferences.
He lived every moment of his life wrapped in my love, recklessly indulging in it.
I loved him so much, and in the end, I didn’t even get a single word of love from him in return.
It hurt… it hurt so much.
Thankfully, in the six months since I left him, Jason gave me all his patience and love.
He showed me that I was someone worthy of being loved, someone who deserved to be cherished and held in someone’s heart, wholeheartedly and unconditionally.
“Eliza, I know everything in the past was my fault. Just give me a little more time. I can do all of everything you said,” Edward pleaded. “I’ll figure out what you like and I’ll help you achieve all the

things you’ve always wanted.”
By the end, his voice was tinged with tears.
But I had long since lost patience. I cut him off coldly. “Take your precious dear sister and get the hell out of my life. The farther, the better! Don’t ever come in front of me with that fake pitiful act again. It disgusts me!”
Just as the last word left my lips, Jason burst through the tearoom door in a rush and pulled me tightly into his arms.
“Eliza, are you okay? Did you get hurt anywhere?”
Once he saw I was safe and unharmed, he let out a sigh of relief. Then he turned sharply to glare at Edward.
“What are you doing here again? Whatever you’re planning, it doesn’t matter. I’ve already notified the Hall Family. They’ll be here soon to drag you back where you belong.”
Without another glance, Jason took my hand and led me away.
We left behind only the image of our composed and unbothered backs, completely unaware of the darkness that had begun to cloud Edward’s face.
Edward’s POV
It hadn’t been easy for Edward to escape.
