Chapter 9
He didn’t chase after me, just stood quietly in place, softly murmuring “I’m sorry.”
A month later, he failed to keep our appointment.
“We had agreed to meet at the family court to sign the final divorce decree, but he sent a last–minute text saying he had to fly to Dallas for business.”
I knew he was stalling, unwilling to face that formal goodbye.
During this time, he began quietly trying to rebuild our connection–sending coffee, flowers, bracelets, reminiscent of those days years ago when he tried to help me overcome the trauma of
losing both parents.
But I rejected everything.
At 3 AM, he suddenly appeared beneath my newly rented apartment building, calling to ask me to
come down.
“Claire, I’m worried about you… I’m afraid you might do something foolish.”
I almost laughed out loud.
“David, you always think you understand me, but you don’t understand me at all.”
“You thought I would break down, that I would sink into despair? But honestly, away from both of you toxic people, I’ve been living a fulfilling, genuinely happy life.”
The eighteen–year–old Claire might have needed David’s protection, but the current Claire doesn’t.
David’s eyes were bloodshot as he searched my face for any sign of insincerity.
Finally, as if breaking down, he growled uncontrollably:
“I’m sorry, it’s me, I’m the one who needs you, I’m the one who can’t let go! Claire, please, please
come back to me!”
I looked at him calmly, then called the building security to escort him away.

When the cooling–off period ended and the decree entered its formal execution phase, he was still “on business” in Dallas.
I edited the most “revealing” parts of the car recording and sent it to his email.
He returned the very next day.
“Claire, let’s go sign the final papers tomorrow.”
“Before that, may I take you out for one last meal? As a farewell.”
I agreed.
I’d do it as closure for the eighteen–year–old David.
Without him, I might have followed my family into death that year.
Our final meal was at home.
He personally prepared a table full of dishes I loved: tomato chicken pasta, roasted bass, Caesar salad… From ingredient selection to spice combinations, everything showed his familiar precision.
Yet the original flavor could never be recaptured.
David’s phone, placed beside him, suddenly rang.
Lena’s name flashed on the screen.
He glanced at me nervously, explaining:
‘I’ve already broken up with her. And she moved out a while ago, she doesn’t live upstairs anymore.”
said flatly: “That’s your private business. You don’t need to report to me.”
The phone rang persistently.
suddenly remembered Maya mentioning she’d bumped into Lena at the hospital yesterday, and couldn’t help but smile.
‘Are you sure you don’t want to answer? Your mistress seems to have something urgent.”
David hesitantly pressed the answer button.

To prove his innocence, he put it on speaker.
Lena’s words, however, made his expression change drastically.
“David, I’m pregnant!”
Her voice bubbled with joy.
“I want to see you now!”
David’s face instantly went pale. He shouted angrily into the phone:
“That’s impossible! The only time I finished inside you, you took the morning–after pill!”
As he said this, he couldn’t even look me in the face.
Lena clearly hadn’t expected such an intense reaction, and her tone softened:
“David, I’m not lying. I really am pregnant. Don’t you remember that night when we broke up, we
still…”
David irritably cut her off:
“I wore a condom. You can’t be pregnant!”
Lena retorted confidently:
‘How should I know?”
‘The point is–I’m pregnant, the child is yours, and if you try to disappear, I swear I’ll show up at your company and make a scene. Let’s see how you explain that to your partners!”
A shadow fell over David’s eyes. He abruptly hung up, then slowly turned his gaze toward me–my
ace showing not the slightest surprise.
He finally realized something:
‘Claire, this… does this have something to do with you?”
He might be despicable, but he was still clever.
I had punctured the condoms, but if he truly felt remorseful, why would he still be entangled with

I didn’t answer David. Standing up, I said:
