Chapter 7
C
A few months earlier, a defendant dissatisfied with a verdict tried to run David over in revenge.
When the car came rushing toward us, I pushed David out of the way.
He escaped unharmed, while both my legs were fractured.
For a long time, I couldn’t leave my bed and even lost control of my bladder and bowels.
I wanted to hire a professional caregiver, but David refused, saying a stranger couldn’t take proper
care of me.
So he stayed by my bedside day and night, personally bathing me, cleaning me, and dealing with my
waste.
Whenever I turned away in shame over my incontinence, he would comfort me softly, holding my hand and saying, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here with you. I love you.”
But now I discovered he not only found my condition disgusting but had described my humiliating
state to Lena.
Suddenly, I couldn’t be certain what was real and what was fake throughout our years together.
Our intimacy, our closeness, his tenderness… had it all been an act? I felt desperate to the point of
madness.
Lena observed my expression and snorted coldly, making no effort to hide the hostility in her eyes:
“I know what I said sounds harsh, but it’s the truth.”
“Wake up, you’re what, thirty already? In a few more years, no one will want you even as a mistress. Be smart–pack up your pathetic belongings and get out before you embarrass yourself further. Stop clinging to David, will you!”
I took a deep breath, walked up to her, and slapped her hard across the face.
Lena covered her face and screamed:
“You hit me?”

I slapped her again with the back of my hand.
Lena’s fair cheek instantly swelled red. She shrieked, “I’m calling the police! David will be back soon, and I’ll have him charge you with assault!”
I laughed coldly, grabbing her hair and slapping her several more times:
“Perfect, when he gets back I’ll hit him too.”
“I’ll be waiting for him to press charges!”
Lena’s eyes widened, her beautiful face distorting slightly as she glared at me venomously:
“You’re insane!”
“You’re mentally ill just like your murderer mother!”
A piercing screech tore through my eardrums, followed by a roaring in my head.
My vision blurred for a moment:
“What did you say?”
Lena gave me a contemptuous sidelong glance:
“Mental illness is hereditary. Your mother was sick, so of course you are too.”
“David says you cry inexplicably in the middle of the night, keeping him from sleeping properly.”
“As they say, the crazy old woman gave birth to a crazy little-”
I couldn’t hold back anymore.
I lunged at her, grabbing her throat.
She couldn’t get a word out, only broken screams forced from her mouth, fear flickering in her eyes.
My entire body shook, with only one thought in my mind: make her shut up.
“Claire, what are you doing!”
David rushed over and pulled me off Lena.

Lena gasped for air, throwing herself into his arms.
“David, Claire tried to kill me!”
David frowned slightly:
“Claire, I said everything, was my fault. If you’re angry, direct it at me.”
Tears silently rolled down my face.
I looked up at him as if at a stranger:
“Why did you lie to me?”
He paused:
“What?”
I didn’t want to cry in front of these two, but the tears wouldn’t stop.
“If you’ve been disgusted by me all along, why keep up the pretense?”
“If you just fell out of love, what’s so hard about admitting it?”
“Why didn’t you let me go sooner?!”
I leaned weakly against the wall, slowly sliding down to crouch on the floor, hugging my knees as I sobbed uncontrollably.
David stared at me in shock, then suddenly darkened his expression and roughly pushed Lena away.
‘What exactly did you tell her?”
Lena’s eyes immediately reddened with hurt: “David, you’re hurting me…”
David remained unmoved, his face grim and voice ice–cold:
Don’t make me ask twice.”
ena had never seen him like this and stood frozen in fear:
I… I didn’t say much… I just mentioned her mother, and she got like this.”

David clenched his fists, his expression completely changed.
“How do you know about that?”
Realizing something, he raised his voice:
“Did you lie to Claire, saying I told you these things?”
