Chapter 4
I walked up to David.
His chiseled face was still the one I’d loved for many years.
Wet hair fell casually across his forehead, his eyes deep, his nose straight and high.
But his usually composed expression now showed rare traces of panic.
“Claire, I…”
Ignoring him, I smiled at the girl in his arms:
“Lena, is it thrilling to sneak into someone else’s home for an affair?”
She covered her chest, curled up in David’s arms, too afraid to move, her fair skin flushed crimson.
David pressed his thin lips together:
“This isn’t about her. It’s my fault.”
I looked him up and down, unable to hold back a scornful laugh:
“Put some clothes on, David.”
Ignoring his ashen face, I tossed the student ID at Lena and turned to leave.
Maya drove me to a bar for a few drinks.
As soon as we got in the car, David called.
I declined.
He called again.
I simply muted my phone.
Maya carefully studied my expression through the rearview mirror:

“David didn’t chase after you? He just let you leave?”
I twisted my lips into a semblance of a smile:
“He wasn’t wearing any clothes.”
Maya slapped the steering wheel, cursing, then asked:
“Who’s the other woman? Have you met her before?”
I recalled the name on the student ID.
“Her name is Lena.”
“Lena? Why does that sound so familiar?”
“Yes, we’ve both met her before.”
“We have?”
Maya seemed surprised.
She tried to remember, then suddenly exclaimed:
“It’s her?!”
Six months ago, David was shopping with Maya and me. He left for a few minutes to buy us milk tea.
Suddenly, we heard a commotion ahead.
We walked over to find a girl being beaten by several furious women who had pinned her to the
ground.
They hurled vulgar insults while hitting her.
The girl trembled, her face filled with fear, her voice shaking as she begged:
“No, you’ve got the wrong person! I’m not a homewrecker!”
The lead woman grabbed her long hair, yanking her up from the ground.
“He spent all his money on you. Do you think I’m blind and stupid?”

“You shameless little seat If you don’t return all the money today, I’ll strip you naked right here so everyone can see how you seduce ment”
With that, the angrily slapped the girl across the face.
The girl stumbled away, only to crash right into me. I cried out in surprise, losing my balance.
Just as I was about to fall, a strong pair of hands steadied me.
It was David, returning with our milk tea.
He held me steady, softly reassuring me.
Mall security arrived to control the situation, escorting the violent women out
The girl ran over to us, teary–eyed:
Please… they’ll definitely wait for me at the mall entrance!”
“Please help me. Could I ride in your car to get away?”
Afraid I wouldn’t believe her, she quickly pulled out her student ID:
I swear I’m not a homewrecker!”
‘My name is Lena. I’m a sophomore majoring in ballet.”
Look, this is my account where I post dance videos. I really didn’t do anything wrong.”
She wept profusely, holding up her phone in her defense.
Seeing her dirt–stained dress from being stepped on, my heart softened. I nodded, allowing David to give her a ride.
In the car, she asked with wide eyed curiosity what we did for work.
When David mentioned he was a lawyer, her eyes lit up.
‘Could I have your card?” she asked softly. “In case they come after me again…”
‘I wish we’d never helped her! Do you think she had her eye on David even back then?” Maya fumed indignantly.

I remembered the tenderness in David’s eyes as he carried Lena from the bathroom, and my nails
dug deep into my palms.
If David hadn’t reciprocated, Lena could never have ended up in his bed.
“Claire, what are you going to do?”
“I want a divorce.”
