My phone suddenly rang.
It was Maya.
“Claire, where are you?”
“Your husband David just called me, asking if you were at my place.”
“I told him you were sleeping, so he didn’t ask to speak with you.”
She hesitated:
“Did you two have a fight?”
“No.”

“He’s cheating on me.”

‘Claire, where are you right now?”

‘Why aren’t you going up? Where’s David?”
I looked up at our brightly lit windows, while the girl’s apartment upstairs was completely dark.
I smiled faintly and said softly:
‘David… brought his lover to our home.”

Worried I might do something rash, Maya insisted I stay put. She was driving over to get me.
I checked the time:
“I’m going upstairs to drop something off first. Won’t take long. I’ll wait for you at the building
entrance after.”
Maya frantically pleaded:
“Claire, I’m begging you, don’t go! If you must, at least wait for me!”
