Chapter 16
Hearing those words, Camden looked panicked. He grabbed Maya’s hands tightly. “No, that’s not- Maya, you’re just angry with me. You don’t want to forgive me. You can hit me, yell at me, whatever–I was a complete asshole, I screwed up. But don’t just… don’t erase what we had, okay?”
What they had?
Maya frowned at those words, looking up at Camden.
“Camden, do you even remember why we got married?”
Camden’s expression froze, guilt flashing in his eyes.
Seeing his silence, Maya continued. “You won’t say it? Fine, I will. You were in love with Lily, but because of your family connection, you couldn’t be together openly. So you and Lily schemed together–you married me as a cover. And you’re telling me I’m erasing our past? That’s laughable. What past could we possibly have?”
Camden opened his mouth, wanting to explain, but every word Maya said was true. There was nothing he could say.
“Actually, from the day you showed up here, I’ve been wondering–why come looking for me? Wasn’t my leaving exactly what you wanted? Until I found out what happened between you and Lily after I left. Camden, what exactly am I to you? Some disposable pet you can call whenever you need? Lily dumps you, so you come crawling back to me. Is this what you call love? Because if it is, then all I can say is your love is pretty damn cheap.”
Maya had never said any of this before, but Camden’s constant disruption of her life had pushed her to her limit.
‘I’m sorry, Maya. It’s all my fault.” Camden gripped her hands tighter, but seeing the ice in her eyes, his heart sank into an abyss.
‘Everything that happened before ended the moment I decided on divorce. I can’t say I’ve forgiven and moved on–I can’t forgive either you or Lily. So please, stay out of my life. Stop bothering me.”
With those final words, Maya stood up and left without hesitation.
Camden watched her go. This was the first time Maya had spoken so calmly about all of this. Before, when she’d alked about divorce, moved to London, treated him coldly, he’d thought she was just mad at him but still loved him leep down.
Only now, hearing her speak with such emotional detachment, did he realize–she’d stopped loving him long ago.
The thought made Camden’s chest ache with the realization that he’d lost her completely.
After that day, Maya didn’t see Camden for a long time.
She assumed he’d finally given up and gone back to the States, so she put it out of her mind.

Chapter 16
Her relationship with James grew stronger. Whether talking about work or life, they never ran out of things to
discuss.
One day, Maya got a call from Grace saying they were having dinner that night–her parents were in town.
Maya hadn’t expected to meet James’s parents so soon. She spent the afternoon anxious and distracted.
When work ended, she walked out of the museum to find James waiting by his car.
He opened the passenger door for her, and she got in.
As they drove, Maya peppered him with questions about his parents‘ preferences.
Seeing how nervous she was, James laughed and took her hand. “Relax, it’s just dinner.”
“What if your parents don’t like me?”
“I like you. That’s enough,” James said casually.
“That’s not how it works.”
“Don’t worry. Grace has been singing your praises to them since college. They already adore you–none of your worries are going to happen.”
At dinner, Maya met James’s parents for the first time. Just as he’d promised, they were warm and welcoming, their conversation full of genuine appreciation and acceptance.
By the end of the meal, Maya’s anxiety had completely disappeared. This feeling of being respected and genuinely cared for was completely different from how she’d felt when she was about to marry Camden.
Maya’s thoughts drifted to Camden, and when she looked up, she saw a familiar figure standing across from their table. It was Camden!
For a moment, Maya wondered if she was hallucinating.
James followed her gaze and spotted Camden too.
He squeezed her hand gently, his voice soft. “Don’t worry about him.”
The warmth of his palm calmed Maya’s nerves. She nodded.
Right. She didn’t need to worry about him.
After dinner, James walked Maya home. As she reached for her keys, a figure in the distance made her freeze.
Camden again.
Maya rubbed her forehead, exasperated. “Camden, what the hell are you doing?”

Chapter 16
“Maya, I remember everything you said last time. I didn’t appreciate what I had before, but now that I’ve found you again, I’m going to make it right.”
Maya looked at him helplessly. “I already made myself crystal clear. Your scheming with Lily, the baby I lost–none
of that can be fixed.”
Camden stared at her, looking lost. Maya used the moment to unlock her door and go inside.
She’d said everything that needed saying. If Camden wanted to keep obsessing, that was his choice and had nothing
to do with her.
