Chapter 6
“Of course.” Camden didn’t even hesitate, following Lily as she walked away.
Whatever question he’d been asking and that nagging feeling in the back of his mind–all forgotten.
Maya watched him go, and for the first time, she didn’t feel heartbroken. She felt… relieved.
When they got home that night, Maya pulled out the papers from her purse. The documents were wrinkled from how tightly she’d been gripping them.
The words “Divorce Agreement” seemed to glow under the lamplight.
She walked to the study door and knocked softly, just loud enough for him to hear.
She waited five seconds. No response. So she pushed the door open.
Camden was sitting at his massive desk with his back to her, talking to someone on the phone. His long fingers were typing away, the clicking echoing through the room.
“Yeah, I’m home. You’re about to start your period, so no ice cream tonight. Be good, Lily.”
His voice was stern but dripping with affection.
Maya’s fingers trembled slightly.
He was so gentle and caring with Lily–showing her a kind of genuine love Maya had never experienced from him.
She stood quietly in the doorway, waiting for Camden to finish his call.
Camden finally turned around, frowning slightly. “Maya? How long have you been standing there?”
Maya walked over and placed the documents in front of him. “Just got here. I need you to sign this.”
Camden barely glanced at the papers. He picked up his pen and flipped straight to the last page, scrawling his signature without a second thought.
Maya watched him sign so effortlessly, feeling like someone was squeezing her heart in a vice.
He didn’t even read a single word. After five years of marriage, was their relationship really that meaningless to
aim?
Maya opened her mouth, her voice strangely calm. “Camden, I-”
His phone started ringing, cutting her off.

Chapter 6
Camden glanced at the screen and immediately picked up.
His voice instantly went soft. “Lily, hey, slow down… okay, I’m on my way.”
He hung up and was already on his feet, grabbing his suit jacket from the chair.
‘Lily’s car broke down. I gotta go get her. Get some sleep, don’t wait up.”
Maya stood frozen as she watched him rush toward the door.
Her fingers clenched the signed divorce papers so hard her knuckles went white.
she suddenly called out to him.
Camden.”
He turned around, annoyance written all over his face.
What? I’m really in a hurry here.”
Maya had so much she wanted to say.
she wanted to tell him that in the past six months, he’d spent more time taking Lily to the doctor for a cold than he’d ever spent celebrating Maya’s birthday. She wanted to mention how last month, when she had a 103–degree fever, he’d ditched her to cheer up Lily at the beach because she was “feeling down.” She wanted to remind him that last week was their fifth wedding anniversary–which he’d completely forgotten because Lily had gotten scolded by his
lad and needed comforting.
But in the end, she just shook her head.
Nothing. Go ahead.”
As Camden’s figure disappeared from view, Maya finally understood what it felt like to be so devastated that you couldn’t even feel devastated anymore. So hurt that you went completely numb.
