Chapter 4
Maya was in the hospital for a few days before Camden finally showed up.
He looked guilty as hell, gripping her hand tight.
‘Fuck, Maya, I’m so sorry. I thought you were just… I don’t know, being dramatic or something. I had no idea you actually got hit by a car.”
Maya’s stare was ice cold. “You seriously think I’d fake a car accident for attention?”
Maybe her frosty attitude got to him, because for the next few days Camden was all over her–super sweet, waiting
on her hand and foot.
When they got home from the hospital, Camden brought her chicken soup, looking at her with these puppy dog eyes.
Thanks.” Maya took the bowl, making sure their fingers didn’t touch.
Camden kept staring at her face, then reached out to stroke her cheek. “You’ve lost weight.”
Maya smoothly dodged his hand. “Doctor said I need to take it easy.”
Camden grabbed her shoulders, his breathing getting heavier as his lips brushed her ear. “I know, but it’s been so
ong since we… God, I’ve missed you.”
That familiar touch used to make Maya melt. Now it just made her want to throw up.
Lily.” Camden suddenly whispered in her ear, his voice barely audible.
ime seemed to freeze. Maya’s whole body went rigid. She shoved Camden away hard, staring him down with laser
ocus.
Camden finally realized what he’d just said, his face going white. “Shit, no, I meant-”
His excuses came out frantic and panicked. Maya cut him off, her voice deadly calm.
I’m still recovering. Plus we have that family dinner tonight, so I need to get ready.”
Camden stood in the doorway watching Maya disappear from view.
Some weird feeling crept up on him–not guilt, not anger, but this gnawing uneasiness.
Like something was shifting, but he couldn’t put his finger on what.
At seven that night, Maya and Camden walked into the Harrington family house together,

The second they stepped inside, all eyes turned to them. Lily stood next to Camden’s mom in a soft pink dress, looking like everyone’s favorite little princess.
“Maya! How are you feeling, sweetheart?”
“Much better, thanks, Mom.” Maya smiled back, her eyes catching the roses scattered around the living room.
“You like them? Had them specially arranged for you,” Camden whispered in her ear.
Maya’s nails dug into her palms. She was allergic to roses–she’d told Camden during their first year of marriage.
“Uncle Cam is so thoughtful! Yesterday I mentioned how I can’t stand the smell of gardenias, and today he switched everything to roses.”
Lily linked arms with Camden all cozy–like. The relatives around them exchanged knowing looks, and Camden’s sister actually giggled behind her hand.
It hit Maya like a brick wall–everyone in this family knew about Camden and Lily. It was the world’s worst kept
secret.
“I’ll go help in the kitchen.” Maya pulled away from Camden’s grip.
In the kitchen, the Harrington women were bustling around.
Maya reached for a serving platter, but Camden’s older sister snatched it away. “You’re injured, honey. Just sit this
one out.”
It sounded caring, but her eyes were full of pity.
“That Lily just keeps getting more gorgeous,” Camden’s sister–in–law said while arranging fruit. “I heard she’s quite the catch overseas. Guys are literally lining up to date her.”
‘Oh, absolutely. If it wasn’t for…” Camden’s sister started to respond, then caught sight of Maya in the doorway and
shut her mouth.
Maya pretended not to hear, turning to grab wine glasses. The rash on her arm had spread to her wrist and she was struggling to breathe. She quietly popped an allergy pill from her purse, the bitter taste spreading across her tongue.
But that bitterness was nothing compared to the pain in her chest.
When dinner rolled around, Maya got stuck on Camden’s left while Lily claimed his right side.
“I brought everyone together tonight for two reasons,” Camden’s dad announced. “First, to celebrate Maya’s recovery. And second, to share some exciting news.”
