Hughie contacted Josh, the Royal Guard’s documentation officer, who relayed Waldo’s message to Jessica through intermediaries.
By the time Jessica had settled her affairs and arrived at Waldo House under the pretense of official business, two full days had already passed.
Waldo’s injuries had improved a bit, but he remained in low spirits.
Not only was his face deathly pale, but his entire being seemed utterly lifeless.
“May I ask why Your Highness has summoned me?” she inquired, “The Royal Guard is responsible for the safety of Your Highness and the princes. Has there been some trouble recently? Has someone broken into the residence to attempt an assassination?”
Jessica stood a dozen paces away, expressionless as she gazed at Waldo on the sickbed.
It had only been a week or so since their last meeting at the autumn hunt, yet Waldo seemed like a completely different man. The vibrant and confident nobleman he once was had vanished. Now, he was just a listless, broken patient.
Waldo looked at her, his voice barely above a whisper. “Jessica…”
“Your Highness still hasn’t answered my question,” Jessica said, her gaze as cold and indifferent as still water. “Would Your Highness please inform me if there have been any intruders at Waldo House?”
“Jessica, must we really meet like this now?” Her strictly professional tone and attitude cut Waldo to the core.
They were once inseparable lovers.
Though they maintained proper physical boundaries, their hearts were always intimately connected.
Now, the unfamiliarity in her gaze left him utterly shaken.
He said, “Jessica, I was wrong before… Won’t you just give me another chance?”
Jessica asked, “Your Highness, do you happen to know where Priscilla is now?”
Waldo’s eyes darkened slightly, a complex emotion flickering across, them. “I know… she’s in the Laundry Quarters… Jessica, after all, she’s someone l brought back. No matter what happens to her in the future, I… I just can’t stand by and watch her suffer. Jessica, I want to get her out of there. Would you… agree to that?”
“That’s none of my business. I just thought Your Highness had nothing better to do, so I figured I’d let you dwell on your own problems.”
Jessica leaned against the table, her gaze utterly indifferent.
There was no anger, not even a trace of resentment, just utter indifference, as calm and still as undisturbed water, without a single ripple.
Jessica’s demeanor left him utterly devastated.
It seemed they truly could never go back to how things were.
He said, “Jessica…”
Jessica smirked, “Let me guess, Your Highness, are you about to say that just because your leg is crippled, I won’t even look at you anymore?”
Jessica’s smile dripped with sarcasm.
She added, “Your Highness, your family truly masters the art of guilt tripping. You’ve brought this upon yourselves, yet you still expect me to look at you with pity or sympathy?”

“Jessica!” Waldo cried out in anguish. “Why must you always speak to me like this?”
However, a flicker of guilt did cross Waldo’s eyes.
He thought in his current pitiful state, at least Jessica might take pity on him, perhaps even reconsider.
After all, at this point, Waldo was at his wits‘ end, he could find no better way to win Jessica back.
He was truly starting to panic.
That day, he saw Jessica had eyes only for Leon.
He looked at Jessica, his voice trembling. “Jessica, I got hurt saving you… Don’t you feel anything for me at all?”
“Your Highness, do you even know what I went through before encountering the black wolf?”

Jessica’s smile vanished, her gaze turning icy cold in an instant. “Assassins! A whole squad sent to take my life! Care to guess who they resembled?”
She narrowed her eyes, then suddenly scoffed. “Royal martyrs!”
