Chapter 6

A week later, Rachel was crouching in the corner when she heard the door open. She quickly stood up and rushed towards me. “Ryan!”
Her leg, numb from sitting, gave way. She stumbled, reaching out to steady herself against me.
I coldly stepped aside, avoiding her touch.
Her hand froze in mid–air, tears welling up in her eyes. “Ryan, I promise I’ll never see Nathan again. Is that okay?”
Afraid I might ignore her, Rachel hastily pulled out her ID. “Let’s go get our marriage license today, alright? I’ve brought all the documents. This time, I swear I won’t leave you hanging.
I’ve checked the dates. After we get the license, we can have the wedding next month… No, even mid–this month. How about I take you to get fitted for a suit in a few days?

For a long moment, Rachel watched me anxiously.
Then I laughed.

The marriage I had once dreamed of turned out to be so simple
to arrange.
Rachel had never before brought up getting our marriage license.
Last year, on our fifth anniversary, I got down on one knee and proposed.
Rachel impatiently brushed her hair aside. “What’s the rush? I’m young. I’m not ready to be buried in marriage just yet.”
She rejected me in front of everyone at the restaurant. I became the talk of the town, and her friends never missed a chance to mock me.

don’t want to marry you. I just wanted to wait a bit longer…”
I shook my head. “Rachel, you’re the one who’s been acting all this time. When I loved you, you took it for granted. Now that I’m over you, you’re here begging.
You’ve been with Nathan. What makes you think I’d want someone’s leftovers?
As expected, Rachel didn’t bother me again after that.
Having cut ties with that whole crowd, I decided to focus on my
career.
My guidance counselor had seen potential in me back in school. I specialized in computer science, developing quite a few game
programs.
The game that once took the internet by storm, “Baa Baa Bleat“,
was my creation.

Rachel didn’t know this. She thought I was a failure and disapproved of my game development pursuits.

For love, I willingly gave up the career I was passionate about.
But that didn’t mean I lacked ability.
As soon as I returned to game development, old acquaintances reached out with offers. One of them was even Felicia Norman,
Rachel’s arch–rival.
Felicia wore a perfectly tailored deep V–neck dress that hugged her curves. Her plunging neckline drew attention, while her long legs seemed to go on forever. Every move she made oozed charm. “It’s been a while, Ryan,” she smiled.
For Rachel’s sake, I had always kept my distance from Felicia, missing out on numerous opportunities to make it big.

Looking back, I realized how much I had passed up.

I took Felicia’s hand in mine, noticing her ears turn pink with bashfulness.
It surprised me to see this softer side of the notorious businesswoman who ruled Ace City.
Felicia swiftly steered the conversation back to game development. She expressed her intention to fully invest in my company and offered to handle marketing and promotion for my upcoming game.
Skeptical of such a generous offer, I couldn’t help but ask, “Ms. Norman, you’re willing to trust me without even visiting my company?”
She looked at me approvingly. “I trust my judgment of people. I’ve heard about your Global Innovation in Technology Award from your college days. Even your dean spoke highly of you. And let’s not forget… ‘Baa Baa Bleat‘ was quite the sensation in its time.” 5/6

I was surprised she even knew I was behind “Baa Baa Bleat”!
It had been a while since I’d received such praise. My confidence soared. With my skills, creating another hit game wouldn’t be a problem. “Well, Ms. Norman, if you’re putting your faith in me, I won’t let you down!”
In just two short months, I single–handedly led my team to launch the mobile game “Dragon’s Call“. On its release day, it hit a staggering 30 million users across all servers.
