Chapter 10
When I regained consciousness, I found myself bound at the wrists and ankles, lying on an
unfamiliar bed.
Dim light filtered through the curtains; I couldn’t tell if it was dawn or dusk outside.
The door clicked open, and a flood of bright light poured in. That’s when I noticed a camera set up at the foot of the bed, recording.
My entire body froze, my heart clenching violently.
David walked in with another man I didn’t recognize.
Standing by the window, he said softly to me:
“I didn’t want it to come to this… but I truly can’t bear to lose you.”
He bent down and gently caressed my face:
“I’m sorry, but I want you by my side forever.”
I struggled furiously, screaming, calling him insane, saying he wasn’t fit to be human–David showed
no reaction.
He stood silently against the light, his expression hidden from me.
I only heard him say calmly to the other man:
‘Don’t hurt her.”
The man approached me with contempt in his eyes.
He began unbuckling his belt.
[ears flowed from the corners of my eyes into my hair. Watching him remove his belt, pulling it rom his waist, I knew escape was hopeless. I called David’s name one last time, then stopped
resisting.
But just as the man was about to touch me, David suddenly rushed forward, pushing him away from

His voice trembling, he said:
“I’m sorry… I can’t go through with this…”
The man scrambled to his feet, pointing at David and cursing:
“Are you kidding me?”
“You paid me to ‘shoot some footage‘ with your wife. I’m halfway through, and now you’re canceling?”
David closed his eyes briefly:
“I’ll still pay you. Now get out.”
The man muttered “psycho bastard” as he left.
After he was gone, David untied the ropes binding me. I slapped him hard across the face. He grabbed my hand and said, “Do it again. Hit me harder.”
I pushed him away, quickly put on my clothes and fled.
“David, you disgust me. Goodbye forever!”
He didn’t try to stop me, collapsing where he sat, sobbing hoarsely, repeating over and over:
“I’m sorry…”
I reported him to the police immediately.
The camera meant to be a tool of humiliation became evidence to convict David.
A few days later, Lena showed up at my door, throwing a prenatal report in my face, demanding arrogantly that I drop the charges.
I laughed coldly, reminding her:
“This is now a criminal case. Even if I wanted to drop it, I legally can’t.”
“David’s reputation is completely ruined. He can never again provide you with the lifestyle you once

had. The smartest thing you could do is terminate this pregnancy and return to college.”
Unfortunately, she wouldn’t listen.
She scoffed at my words:
“Don’t try to drive a wedge between David and me. Do you think I’m stupid?”
“You’re just jealous because he chose me over you! The only reason he’s in trouble is because you made up stories to frame him. If he really did something wrong, why would he have stopped that
guy?”
Maya chased her away for me.
In the end, David admitted to all charges during the police investigation: unlawful detention, attempted assault, conspiracy to commit sexual offenses, plus illegal use of recording devices.
The day the verdict came down, I was vacationing in Miami.
“Claire, I heard you accepted the company’s overseas assignment.”
“Yes, I thought it would be a good opportunity for me.”
The sun slowly sank into the Florida Bay, the horizon tinged with gold and red.
“Before my travel plans began, David had his lawyer request to see me one last time.”
“I refused before the phone call even finished.”
“Happy divorce, David.”
I watched as the sun gradually dipped below the horizon.
Messages from Maya kept coming in, along with a few videos.
Lena had been expelled from school.
“Someone uploaded surveillance footage of Lena and David having sex in the school dance studio to
TikTok.”
After sending this message, Maya added a mocking emoji.

Then she sent more updates.
“Claire, guess what happened to Lena in the end.”
“After David was imprisoned, she was surrounded by reporters. In the chaos, she fell down some stairs and hemorrhaged severely. She lost the baby, and doctors had to perform an emergency hysterectomy to save her life.”
‘She got what she deserved!”
The sun had completely set below the horizon.
Maya sent one final message: “Claire, have a great journey!”
Leaning against the pier railing, I wiped away tears from the corner of my eye.
I smiled. My own sun was just beginning to rise.
