Chapter 6
Richard was David’s junior colleague and Maya’s childhood friend.
I was chatting with Richard in the conference room when the door suddenly opened.
David burst in.
“Claire, why didn’t you tell me you were coming?”
Richard shot to his feet, stepping between David and me with one smooth stride.
“David, Claire came to see me today.”
David narrowed his eyes, giving Richard a cold look, his tone mocking:
“You’re going to represent her in a divorce case?”
“Do you really think you can beat me in court?”
Richard’s lips curved into a slight smile:
“We’ll find out, won’t we?”
David ignored him, frowning as he looked at me:
“Claire, this isn’t as simple as you think. Even with Richard’s help, the court won’t easily approve a
divorce–especially considering our relationship.”
‘Stop this nonsense. Come home, let’s talk properly.”
David reached for my wrist, but Richard blocked him without hesitation.
‘David, Claire didn’t say she wanted to go back with you.”
David’s eyes grew cold, his voice filled with barely suppressed hostility:
‘Step aside. Don’t make me force you.”
Richard raised an eyebrow, saying leisurely:

“It seems David is psychologically prepared for all your colleagues to hear about your mistress.”
David froze, his expression darkening.
I looked at him calmly:
“David, if you don’t want to go to court, let’s take the simple route–we’ll file for a no–fault divorce at
the courthouse.”
“A clean break would save us both trouble.”
Hearing this, David’s eyes reddened as he stared at me intensely.
“A clean break?”
“How can you say such a thing! Don’t you know how much this hurts me?”
“After everything we’ve been through, you want to end it just like that?”
Richard suddenly chuckled beside me:
“David, you’re questioning how she could say such things–perhaps you should first ask yourself
how you could do such things.”
David was silent for a moment before speaking with difficulty:
“Claire, this is between us. There’s no need to involve outsiders. Let’s go home and talk.”
[ gave
him a cold look, stood up, and thanked Richard softly:
‘I’ll prepare the necessary materials. We’ll meet another day.”
To retrieve our marriage certificate and related documents, I had to return to the home David and I
once shared.
The place had been cleaned thoroughly.
No trace remained of that night’s debauchery.
But in my eyes, this home was irredeemably tainted.
After getting what I needed, I was about to leave when my gaze caught the nightstand. Following an

impulse, I walked over and pulled open the drawer.
The number of condoms had obviously decreased by half since the day I left.
I knew what that meant. I had prepared myself for this.
Nevertheless, a dense web of pain spread through my heart.
I don’t know how long I stood there until the sound of the front door opening startled me.
Thinking it was David, I went out to check, only to find Lena.
Seeing me emerge from the bedroom, her expression changed instantly. She rushed into the bedroom to verify I was alone before relaxing.
She leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, eyeing me warily:
“I thought you were divorcing David. Why are you back?”
“I knew you weren’t really planning to let go.”
“David is so exceptional, how could you possibly give him up?”
With David absent, she dropped her “sweet girl next door” act.
Leaning against the doorframe with her arms crossed, she admired her fresh manicure with smug satisfaction, a contemptuous smile playing on her lips.
“I know you look down on me, probably calling me trashy in your head. But you know what? In your husband’s eyes, you don’t even rank as high as someone trashy.“”
She laughed lightly, as if sharing some amusing gossip.
“Want to hear how David describes you? He says you’re disgusting when you have emotional breakdowns and lose control of your bodily functions. He says I’m much better–soft and fragrant,
clean and beautiful.”
Her words floated over casually, but landed on me like boulders, crushing the breath from my lungs.
