Chapter 5
Maya looked concerned: “David’s at the peak of his career. Considering his reputation, he probably
won’t agree to a divorce easily.”
“You two have always seemed so happy together. Even going through legal channels, the judge might not rule in your favor.”
My phone vibrated.
[Baby, give me some time. I’ll handle this.]
I suddenly felt utterly disgusted.
It was already 3 AM when we left the bar.
A familiar car was parked outside.
David leaned against the door smoking, the cigarette tip glowing on and off in the darkness.
I didn’t even know when he’d started smoking.
Seeing me, he hurriedly stubbed out his cigarette and walked over:
“I knocked at Maya’s place but no one answered.”
Worried something happened to you, I had a friend check the street cameras-”
I cut him off:
“I’m fine. You should go.”
“The divorce papers will be sent to you in a few days. Don’t forget to sign them.”
His expression froze:
“Claire, don’t joke about this.”
“After all these years together, you want to just end it?”

“I told you I’d handle the situation with Lena. First, come home with me!”
He grabbed my arm, trying to pull me toward the car.
Maya swung her bag at his arm:
“You cheating bastard, don’t touch Claire!”
She was carrying her Dior tote today–heavy and hard.
David didn’t dodge, just gritted his teeth through several blows.
Suddenly, the passenger door opened and Lena rushed out.
Without hesitation, she positioned herself in front of David, challenging Maya:
“What gives you the right to hit him!”
Seeing her, Maya almost laughed with anger, pointing at David:
“You idiot, you came to apologize to Claire and brought your mistress?”
“Oh hell no! I’m gonna teach you and that homewrecking bitch a lesson you won’t forget!”
She swung her bag again, aiming for Lena’s face.
Afraid Maya might get in trouble, I rushed forward to stop her.
The next moment, I was violently shoved aside, falling hard to the ground.
Pain surged through my body like a tidal wave.
In that critical moment, David had pushed me away to shield Lena, protecting her.
Everyone froze.
Including himself.
He looked at me, his eyes suddenly filled with panic.
I didn’t get angry or surprised–I just smiled at him.

As he started toward me, Lena held him back tightly:
“David, I think I twisted my ankle.…..”
Maya rolled her eyes dramatically, slapping David across the face:
“Get lost, you cheater!”
“Take your mistress and stay far away!”
Lena bit her lip, glaring defiantly at Maya.
Maya glared back with a cold smile:
“Who the hell are you glaring at? You sleep with a married man and expect to be called a lady?”
Back at Maya’s place.
I lay on the soft bed, all my thoughts tangled together, surging through my mind.
It felt like a venomous snake biting at my heart, the pain almost unbearable.
He loves her.
Instinctive preference doesn’t lie.
The phone screen by my pillow lit up.
David’s messages came one after another:
[Are you still in pain? Did your leg injury flare up?]
[It was too urgent, I didn’t realize it was you. That’s on me.]
[We’ve never had a cold war this long. When you’ve calmed down, can we talk?]
[Don’t cry anymore. I don’t want you to suffer.]
I gripped my phone, a violent ache surging through my heart.
From the moment I discovered his affair until now, I hadn’t shed a single tear.

But now, tears suddenly poured down like rain.
My calm shell was torn open, revealing a heart slashed to pieces.
I pulled the blanket over my face and wept silently.
He knew how long it took me to emerge from the shadow cast by my parents. So why would he do something like this?
In the past, whenever I was trapped in nightmares, crying uncontrollably, David would gently wake
- me.
He used to be a deep sleeper, but after being with me, his sleep became lighter.
The moment my breathing grew rapid, he would notice.
He said he didn’t want me to stay in a nightmare for even a second longer.
But now, he had created a nightmare I couldn’t escape from.
Three days later, I walked into David’s law firm.
The receptionist spotted me and said:
“Claire, Attorney David is in a case analysis meeting. He’ll be here soon.”
I paused, then said:
“I have an appointment with Attorney Richard.”
