Chapter 9
Half a month after Christmas, the movie I invested in was released
as scheduled and became a huge success.
Before the red carpet ceremony at the awards show began, I
unexpectedly spotted Jasmine among the crowd of actresses.
However, she wasn’t there alone–she had come with the cast of
a recently popular web series.
She looked completely different from the innocent girl l
remembered. She’d clearly had plastic surgery and her figure was
much more voluptuous than before.
She seemed to want to approach me and strike up a conversation, but my assistant turned her away directly.
The red carpet ceremony officially began, and everything proceeded in an orderly fashion.
Jasmine stood before the flashing cameras, basking in everyone’s
attention, her face glowing with barely contained excitement.
Her social media following had grown by nearly a hundred
thousand thanks to her starring role in the web series.
She seemed one step closer to her dream of stardom.
That evening, the movie I invested in won Best Picture out any

However, just as I opened my phone to share the joy with my team, I suddenly saw a breaking news headline: Serious car accident on highway near film festival, web series actress Jasmine kidnapped and missing.
Blurry surveillance footage showed Jasmine’s van being rear–ended by a beat–up minivan.
Then, when the driver got out to check, a gaunt man suddenly
burst out of the minivan, clutching a kitchen knife.
The driver was scared stiff on the spot.
The man didn’t hurt the driver–he just roughly dragged Jasmine away with him.
I recognized that man as Ethan.
That night, we had a blast at the cast’s celebration party.
I got completely wasted and didn’t fully sober up until three whole days later.
When I pushed open my front door, I found a package
mysteriously placed at my doorstep.
After opening it, a set of hand–sewn baby clothes fell into my
palm, along with a letter and a faded matching lock.
It was from Ethan.

In the letter, he said he finally remembered the mistake he’d made in his previous life.
He felt guilty toward me, and even more guilty toward our son who never got to be born.
He swore to kill Jasmine to atone for our son’s death.
Finally, he hoped I would never have to meet him again in the next life.
I stared silently at the tear stains on the letter, finding it almost laughable.
I scoffed, “You’re too late. How ridiculous.”
I casually tossed the package into the trash, but the moment I
turned around, I bumped into a warm embrace.
The man’s lazy, husky voice spoke up, his tone full of jealousy.
“Nicole, which bastard sent you this?”
Remembering what had happened between us last night, I felt my legs go weak and tilted my head up to kiss him.
“Just someone irrelevant.”
The man happily swept me up in his arms. After closing the door,

We slept together once again.
The next time I heard news about Ethan was on his death
sentence verdict in court.

He had tied Jasmine to stones and sunk her to the bottom of the
sea.
On the day of his execution, Maria jumped from a high–rise building.
Coincidentally, it was the exact same place where my parents had
ended their lives in my previous life.
On the day Sinclair Group went public, I suddenly received a call
from the funeral home.
“Is this Ms. Sinclair? We’re sorry we couldn’t reach any of Ethan’s other relatives. Could you come pick up his ashes? We found your
contact information among his belongings.”
I swirled my wine glass, gazing down at the clear blue sky from the floor–to–ceiling windows on the eighty–ninth floor.
I felt delighted and laughed coldly, “Just flush them down the drain. After all, his true love is still waiting for him at the bottom of
the sea.”
After hanging up, I paid them no more attention.
