Chapter 8
Alone in her room, Aria skipped dinner and locked herself in, packing the last of her belongings.
Mr. and Mrs. Pierce assumed she was just throwing a tantrum, continuously complaining outside
her door.
“Your attitude is getting worse by the day! It’s just a few paintings–do you really need to give your
sister the cold shoulder?”
“Exactly! I think you’ve gotten too full of yourself!”
Amid the barrage of accusations, Maxwell gently knocked on her door.
“Aria, please don’t be upset. Come out and eat something, okay?”
She glanced toward the door, her heart aching but her eyes completely dry.
She had shed too many tears already. Now, she couldn’t cry even if she wanted to.
Outside, Connor irritably pulled Maxwell away. “Uncle, leave her alone. She’s just being dramatic as
usual. Let’s see how many meals she can go without eating.”
Aria smiled to herself.
One meal.
Because tomorrow, she would be gone.
The next morning, she deliberately woke up early, only to discover the Pierce family was already
gone.
Checking her phone, she learned they had left before dawn to visit the Sacred Waters Chapel in the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains.
The chapel was said to be miraculous, but required visitors to hike up to the spring at dawn to place their written prayers in the holy water.
No wonder they’d left so early–they wanted to pray for Serena’s well–being.

Chapter 8
On social media, each family member had posted photos. Every picture and wish was dedicated to
Serena.
Mr. Pierce: “Wishing Serena safety and eternal happiness!”
Mrs. Pierce: “My precious daughter, may all your wishes come true!”
Connor: “May Serena live a peaceful, worry–free life!”
Maxwell hadn’t posted a photo of Serena, just an image of his prayer note.
“Wishing peace and eternal tranquility!”
In her previous life, Maxwell had left many prayer notes at that chapel.
A man who claimed not to believe in religion would visit that sacred spring almost yearly to pray.
Because his notes always contained the initial “A,” she had always assumed she was the one in his
heart.
Only on her deathbed did she discover that Serena’s name appeared at the end of every prayer note.
All those years she had been touched by what she thought was his devotion to her–it had all been a
joke.
Thankfully, heaven had given her another chance, and this time she had fully awakened, avoiding
the same mistakes.
Her phone dinged with a message alert.
“Miss Pierce, welcome to your island. Please proceed to the airport immediately. Our staff will meet you there. May every day of your life on the island be fortunate and worry–free.”
She smiled as she closed her phone, then placed the already–prepared letter disowning her family on
the table.
Before leaving, she remembered something and stopped to remove the necklace from her neck.
It was a family heirloom Maxwell had given her after she confessed her feelings for him.
He had said whoever wore this necklace would be his wife and the future mistress of the Thornton
household.

But now, she no longer cared about being Mrs. Thornton or the mistress of his family.
She placed the heirloom on top of the disownment letter, then pulled her luggage toward the door.
Suddenly, her phone began vibrating frantically.
She paused and took it out.
The screen showed over a dozen missed calls from Mr. Pierce, Mrs. Pierce, Connor, and Maxwell.
She opened the group chat to find countless texts tagging her.
“Aria, Serena accidentally fell down the mountain and is hemorrhaging badly. Come to the hospital immediately to donate blood!”
“You have thirty minutes to get to the hospital!”
“If anything happens to Serena, you’ll be held responsible!”
Aria hesitated momentarily, then expressionlessly clicked “leave group chat” and blocked each of them one by one.
From now on, she would no longer be Serena’s blood bank, no longer Mr. and Mrs. Pierce’s second daughter, no longer Connor’s sister, and certainly not Maxwell’s fiancée.
She was Aria Pierce–just Aria Pierce.
She turned her head one last time to look at the place she had called home for over twenty years, then pulled her luggage without looking back and stepped into the car waiting for her.
As the car drove away, the only thing left behind was a broken SIM card on the ground…
