Chapter 6
The date for Rhett and my mating ceremony was set.
Half a month from now.
Today, Rhett asked me to meet him outside the palace territory for a private talk.
He got straight to the point. “Princess, are you really willing to mate with me?”
I nodded. “Of course.”
“No regrets?”
I paused. It seemed like everyone was shocked that I’d chosen him, even thought I’d regret it–including Rhett himself.
I frowned. “Why do you ask?”
Rhett smiled slightly. “Have you heard the rumors about me, Princess?”
Now I understood what he meant.
“Don’t worry. My father told me everything. I know you had your reasons.”
Everyone said he was a party animal who didn’t take anything seriously–the most unreliable of the
four heirs, the least likely to become a mate to the Princess.
But it was all an act. Behind the scenes, he’d been gathering intelligence for my father. He was one of Father’s most trusted operatives.
Rhett raised an eyebrow, apparently surprised I knew about this.
“There’s one more thing I don’t understand. I hope the Princess can enlighten me.”
“What is it?”
Rhett’s gaze intensified as he stared at me. “Why me?”
I scratched my head awkwardly. Seeing how serious he looked, I had no choice but to tell him about

drawing the sacred stones.
A flash of surprise crossed Rhett’s eyes, as if he hadn’t expected the truth to be so simple.
He burst out laughing. “Then I’m truly blessed. Don’t worry, Princess, I promise I won’t make you regret choosing me.”
I stared at him, feeling oddly certain that he wouldn’t disappoint me.
Even though Rhett and I had grown up together, I’d always been completely focused on Damon.
I’d never sat down with Rhett like this before, just talking openly.
I had to admit, being with him felt… comfortable.
So when he suggested we take a walk around town, I didn’t refuse.
We’d barely taken a few steps when I spotted two familiar figures.
Damon’s brow furrowed deeply. “What are you two doing here?”
Rhett’s gaze shifted between him and Talia, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “What? You two can wander around together like a couple, but my fiancée and I can’t work on our bond?”
Damon’s face suddenly darkened. “It’s not what you think between her and me.”
I couldn’t help but glance at Damon.
This was the first time he’d ever denied his relationship with Talia.
A flash of hurt crossed Talia’s face, but Damon completely ignored it.
Suddenly, one of Rhett’s Betas approached and whispered something in his ear.
He looked at me apologetically, clearly wanting to escort me back to the palace first. But I didn’t want to delay whatever business he had, so I told him to go handle it.
He cast one reluctant glance back at me before following his Beta away.
