Chapter 7
Eliza couldn’t listen anymore. She turned and walked toward the pool in the backyard.
The night air was cool. She had barely sat down when Maya followed her.
“Mrs. Harris,” she said, stroking her belly with a sweet smile, “Mr. Harris promised to buy me a villa after the baby’s born.”
“You know why he lost control that night when he was drugged?” She leaned close to Eliza’s ear. “Because I was wearing a white dress just like your favorite one at the party. He mistook me for you. So really, I have you to thank for where I am now…”
Eliza turned slowly, about to speak when-
SPLASH!
Maya suddenly fell headfirst into the pool, sending water everywhere.
“Help! My baby-” she thrashed in the water, her screams piercing.
When everyone rushed over, this is what they saw:
Maya struggling in the water while Eliza stood at the edge, expressionless.
The Harris family erupted into chaos.
As Liam jumped in to rescue Maya, his grandmother’s hand cracked across Eliza’s face. “You
disgraceful girl! Apologize!”
Eliza’s face turned from the slap, blood trickling from her lip.
She slowly turned back, suddenly smiling. “Fine. I’ll apologize.”
Then she grabbed Maya, who had just been pulled out, and shoved her back into the pool!
“Ahh-”
The old woman screamed.

Chapter 7
Eliza removed the diamond bracelet from her wrist–the family heirloom Liam’s grandmother had personally given her on her wedding day–and smashed it on the ground.
CRACK!
The bracelet shattered into pieces, cold light reflecting in the moonlight.
As she walked away, she heard Liam calling her name in disbelief.
This time, she didn’t look back.
Eliza had barely gotten home when the door was flung open.
Liam burst in, soaked from the rain, his suit half–wet and water dripping from his hair. He’d clearly
rushed after her.
Breathing hard, his eyes swirled with–emotion–anger mixed with panic.
“I did nothing wrong,” Eliza said coldly. “If you want me to apologize, then let’s get divorced.”
The word “divorce” drained all color from his face.
“Don’t say that!” Liam panicked, striding forward and pulling her against him. “You know divorce
would kill me!”
Looking at his reddened eyes, she found it almost laughable.
“What about me?” she asked quietly. “Liam, did you ever think about me?”
He froze.
“I know you’re upset about Maya and the baby, but Grandma threatened suicide, and Maya saved my life. How could I ask her to get an abortion?” His voice was rough. “Liza, please try to understand, just for a little while?”
“So you considered your grandmother, you considered Maya…” her lips twisted. “But never me, right?”
He opened his mouth, seemed about to say something, but just held her tighter.
“It’s okay, it’s okay,” he murmured, patting her back like he was calming a fussy child. “Let’s put this behind us. I’ll explain to Grandma. Once the baby’s born, everything will go back to normal…”

She rested against him, breathing in his familiar pine scent, suddenly feeling utterly exhausted.
His embrace was still warm, his heartbeat still steady, but her heart grew colder by the second.
There was no going back.
Never going back.
Liam, I’m starting a new life, and you have no place in it.
