Chapter 5
The air in the hospital room instantly froze.
The nurse clutched the chart and hurried out, leaving Eliza and Liam staring at each other.
“Are you still mad about the blood donation?” Liam stepped closer, reaching for her face. “It was life or death, Liza. I had no choice.”
Eliza turned away from his touch. His hand hovered awkwardly before dropping.
“Liza, When things settle down,” he said, softening his tone, “I’ll take you to the snow mountain for a vacation, okay?”
She closed her eyes, too exhausted to answer.
After waiting a moment, he asked, “When are you getting out of the hospital?”
Something in his tone made her uneasy. She opened her eyes. “What?”
He hesitated before saying, “Maya’s been really wanting your bone soup… You make it best.”
She froze, a flood of emotions washing over her.
Anger, pain, disbelief… She wanted to ask what he thought she was–his wife or Maya’s personal
chef?
But,
she just said quietly, “Fine. I’ll make it when I get home.”
His face brightened, and he kissed her forehead. “You are so sweet, Liza.”
She accepted the kiss numbly, thinking: Yes, so sweet that I’ll cook for the woman who put me in the hospital.
“I just want her baby to be born safely,” she said softly.
Liam finally noticed something off and frowned. “I thought… you hated the baby?”
She forced a smile. “Not anymore.”

Because she wanted them to be a perfect family of three.
He studied her face for a long time, trying to read her expression, but eventually checked his watch and stood. “Maya needs her medicine. I’ll come back later.”
When the door closed, she lay back, staring at the ceiling, and laughed quietly.
Liam didn’t return for five days.
After being discharged, Eliza went home and made the promised soup, sending it to the hospital
with the driver.
Then she began packing–her passport, documents, a few clothes.
Their photo still sat on the nightstand. She looked at it for a moment, then placed it face down.
On the sixth evening, Liam suddenly came home, alone.
‘Maya’s not with you?” Eliza asked automatically.
Liam gave her a long look. “Still at the hospital.”
‘She’s been there that long?”
He nodded, then stepped closer. “Since she’s not here, let’s go on that snow mountain trip I promised.
Everything’s ready.”
Before she could respond, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her toward the door.
His grip was tight. Eliza stumbled, feeling a flicker of unease.
Something was wrong. His eyes looked like ice.
The car ride was terrifyingly quiet.
Liam gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white.
Eliza watched the scenery blur past, her heart racing.
They reached the snow mountain resort by evening.
As they were about to continue up the mountain, Liam suddenly said, “I forgot something in the car.

Wait here.”
She nodded.
The wind howled as she huddled in her coat, waiting three hours.
When it was completely dark, she finally called him.
“When are you coming back?” Her voice shook in the blizzard.
After a long silence, Liam’s voice came through, colder than the snow: “I’m not. The car’s gone too. If
you want to come back, figure it out yourself.”
“What are you talking about?”
“This is your punishment,” he said with an iciness she’d never heard before. “I told you to wait until
the baby was born, but you put abortion drugs in Maya’s soup. She almost lost our baby. I don’t even
recognize you anymore, Liza.”
Hearing the bitter disappointment in his voice, Eliza’s blood froze.
Abortion drugs? Almost lost baby?
“I didn’t do that!”
“Stop lying,” Liam finally exploded. “You made the damn soup yourself–who the hell else could’ve done it? Why would Maya try to kill her own baby? That kid means everything to her!”
The snowstorm intensified. Frost formed on Eliza’s eyelashes. “So you don’t believe me…”
‘How can I?” His voice was hard. “Walk back yourself. Think about what you’ve done.”
When the call ended, Eliza stood in the snow, her fingers purple with cold.
Liam’s words echoed, cutting like a knife.
She remembered their wedding day, when he’d pressed her against the wall and whispered, “If you ever try to leave me, Liza, I’ll keep you by my side forever.”
Now he’d abandoned her on a mountain.
The storm grew stronger as she prepared to descend. Suddenly, she heard a deep rumble in the

distance.
The dial tone mixed with the howling wind.
An avalanche!
She tried to run but was knocked down by a wave of snow. When she was buried, a sharp pain shot
through her right leg.
Shivering, she pulled out her phone and desperately called Liam.
On the seventh try, he answered.
“Liam! There’s an avalanche, I-”
“Hello?” Maya’s sweet voice came through. “What did you say? I can’t hear you.”
Through the storm, Eliza heard Liam in the background asking gently, “Who is it?”
“Wrong number,” Maya laughed. “Mr. Harris, your porridge is delicious. Ever since someone tried to poison me, I feel so much safer with you cooking.”
Snow fell on her back. She couldn’t hold on anymore and collapsed.
In her final moment of consciousness, she vaguely remembered their wedding day, when he’d knelt
before her and said:
“Eliza, if I ever betray you, let me-”
The snow fell.
Burying all unfinished promises.
