Chapter 4
Eliza woke up to a sharp pain.
Opening her eyes, she found herself in a hospital bed. When she turned her head, she saw Liam sitting beside her, dark circles under his eyes.
‘You’re awake,” he said, leaning forward with obvious relief. “How do you feel?”
Eliza tried to speak, but her throat was too dry.
The last thing she remembered was Liam carrying Maya away while horses charged toward her.
‘Maya got hurt,” Liam said suddenly. “She has a clotting disorder and won’t stop bleeding. The hospital’s running low on blood…”
Eliza’s heart sank.
‘You’re the only matching blood type.” He took her hand. “Could you donate some for her, please?”
Ridiculous. Totally ridiculous.
Eliza pulled her hand away, wincing as the movement jarred her injured ribs.
He’d left her to be trampled by horses, hadn’t even explained himself, and now his first concern was
asking her–while she was injured–to save Maya?
‘No,” she rasped.
Liam frowned. “Just do it for the baby’s sake. Once it’s born, this will all be over.”
A chill ran through her.
She searched his eyes for any guilt or concern for her, but the eyes she’d loved for twenty years showed only urgency and impatience.
“Mr. Harris, Miss Bennett isn’t doing well…” a nurse said quietly from the doorway.
Liam immediately stood, practically forcing Eliza to her feet. “Please, Liza. I’m begging you.”

Chapter 4
She was half–carried to the blood collection room.
When the needle went in, the pain took her breath away.
“Does that hurt?” the nurse asked, confused. “It shouldn’t–I was gentle.”
Eliza shook her head, but couldn’t stop her tears.
She’d always been terrified of needles. Before, Liam would cover her eyes and whisper, “Almost done, babe. You’re doing great.”
Now he stood outside checking his watch, not even looking at her.
After the blood was drawn, Eliza felt dizzy and weak.
While the nurse helped her sit, she watched Liam hurry to Maya’s room without a backward glance.
She followed, stopping at the partially open door.
Maya lay pale in bed, thick bandages around her wrist.
Liam sat beside her, holding her hand, his expression unbearably tender.
“Everything’s okay now,” he said softly. “The baby’s fine too.”
Eliza noticed something on Maya’s wrist.
A familiar leather bracelet.
She’d given it to Liam three years ago during their trip to Sedona: He’d fastened it on himself, saying quietly, “I’ll never take this off.”
Yet now they were on another woman’s wrist.
The pain in Eliza’s chest became unbearable. She turned and walked away.
Back in her room, she curled up on the bed, tears soaking her pillow.
So this was heartbreak–pain so intense it made breathing difficult.
The next morning, a nurse brought a form to complete.

Eliza filled it out mechanically, pausing at marital status before writing “Single.”
“Is this a mistake?” the nurse asked. “You marked ‘single.” Isn’t Mr. Harris your husband?“
“No,” Eliza said quietly. “Not for much longer.”
“What did you just say?”
The door flew open. Liam stood there, staring at her in disbelief.
