Chapter 14
“Can I come see you? Let’s talk in person.”
Camille did not hesitate. “That’s unnecessary. My answer won’t change, no matter whether
we’re in front of each other or not.”
Jameson was not ready to give up. “Then I’ll wait until you come back. I’ll pursue you all over again. This time, I’ll do it right. I’ll make sure all of South City… The whole country— no, the entire world knows how much I love you. I just—”
Camille interrupted calmly, “I’m sorry, Jameson. But I’ve found so many meaningful things in life now. I’m not looking for a relationship anymore. There’s no reason for us to stay in touch.”
With that, she hung up. She did not hear him calling her name again and again on the other
end.
Jameson stared at his phone as the call ended, the beeping tone cutting through the silence. He sat still for a long time before finally clutching his chest and letting out a guttural cry of pain. It was too much. He did not want to process it. He could not.
He stormed out of the house and drove straight to the Gray family’s place.
They were living in one of the cheapest corners of the city now, crammed into a two- bedroom apartment. Sylvia’s father and younger brother shared one room while her mother and Sylvia herself shared the other.
After years of manual labor and no money for skincare, Sylvia’s face and hands had grown rough and weathered.
However, when she saw Jameson at the door, there was no fear in her eyes. “What do you want now, Jameson? I’ve already hit rock bottom.”
He stared at her coldly. “This is rock bottom?”

Sylvia seemed to have realized something. “You found Camille, didn’t you? She rejected you, huh?”
She burst out laughing, looking smug. “Serves you right!”
Jameson’s voice turned icy. “Sounds like you haven’t learned your lesson. So, which is it?
Do
you want to marry an old man in the mountains and pop out kids for him or get sold off to some 60–year–old pervert with money? Your pick.”
The smile vanished from Sylvia’s face.
Then, she cracked and screamed, “Yeah, I lied to you! But Jameson, if you hadn’t wanted to believe me, you could’ve looked into it! Do you think my bullshit could’ve fooled you if you didn’t want to let yourself be fooled?
“I faked cancer and begged for your love, but I didn’t drug you nor did I force you into bed with me! You hypocritical, selfish, cowardly, disgusting man! You cheat and can’t even own up to it, and now, you want to blame me? Well, today I’m going to—”
Before she could finish, Jameson roared, “Shut the fuck up!”
Then, he kicked her hard. She flew into the wall, slammed down onto the floor, and did not
move for a while.
He loomed over her, his voice low and venomous. “Looks like you’re going with option one. Enjoy your life in the mountains.”
Then, he turned and walked away.
Behind him, Sylvia snapped. She let out a crazed laugh, grabbed a steel pipe from the
corner, and charged at Jameson from behind. The pipe swung high and came crashing
down.
With a loud bang, Jameson hit the ground, blood pouring from his head. She dropped the
pipe and slumped next to him, looking dazed.
Someone screamed, and sirens wailed.

Jameson survived, but the blow had damaged his optic nerve. He was permanently blind.
Fate, it seemed, had brought everything full circle. After all that, he was blind again. It was just like when Camille first found him–he was alone and with nothing.
The Hart family could not accept a blind heir, so his father soon began choosing a new
successor from the extended family and among professional executives.
As for Jameson, he moved back to the countryside, into the tiny house where he had once lived with Camille and her grandmother. He spent his days by her grandmother’s tomb, silently keeping watch.
This old house contained the happiest memories of him, Camille, and her grandmother. Back then, it had just been the three of them together as a family. Oddly enough, he felt at
peace here and stopped having nightmares.
Some part of him still believed Camille would come back someday.
Meanwhile, Camille remained overseas, treating patients others could not and solving
cases others had given up on. Her reputation spread, even back home. She was respected
and admired.
Ryan praised his star apprentice every chance he got.
Years passed. One summer, Camille finally returned home. Her plane touched down in
South City, and crowds flooded the airport to welcome her. She gave them a radiant smile
as she waved at them.
At that exact moment, far away in the countryside, Jameson missed a step in the dark. He fell off a cliff and died instantly without anyone ever finding out.
