Chapter 7
Camille did not respond to Jameson’s message.
Jameson felt a wave of unease and reached for his phone to call her. However, Sylvia started coughing up blood again, crying his name. He had no choice but to turn all his attention to
her.
The doctor said she only had a few days left.
Sylvia looked terrible. She was pale and weak, unable to keep anything down. She could barely sit up without coughing up blood.
The Gray family might not be as wealthy as the Hart family, but they were still from the
same elite circle. Their parents had known each other for years.
Jameson and Sylvia practically grew up together. It was a classic childhood sweetheart
story.
They started dating in high school, and both families fully supported their relationship.
However, during their freshman year of college, Sylvia insisted on taking Jameson on a
hiking trip. That was when the accident happened. She left him injured and unconscious.
Then, she fled the country.
After that, the elders of the Hart family changed their opinion of her completely.
Jameson still remembered how he had fallen off the cliff trying to save her. His survival
instincts kicked in, and he grabbed hold of the roots of a tree.
At first, Sylvia tried to pull him up, but when he grabbed her hand, she panicked. She
almost got pulled down with him. Her expression changed, and she yanked her hand away
and ran.
The accident was entirely because of her.
When he first regained his memory, he was still blind at the time and blamed her for what

happened.
Then, he met Camille.

She was so kind to him. With her by his side, his vision returned, his memory came back,
and his life turned around.
Somehow, all that bitterness just faded away.
Then, Sylvia came back. The Gray family’s real estate empire had collapsed, and they were near bankruptcy. On top of everything else, she had cancer.
Jameson’s heart softened.
After all those years of knowing her, how could he just watch her die?
She only had a month left.

Camille and him still had their whole lives ahead of them. They had decades together.
He put down his phone and focused completely on Sylvia. He wanted to take her to the hospital, just in case she needed emergency care.
However, she refused. Her face was pale as she said, “I don’t want to die in some cold hospital ward. This is my last wish. James, please say yes?”
James–that was what she used to call him as a child. She had not called him that since they started dating in high school.
Hearing it again made his heart ache.
“Okay.”
The next morning, Sylvia said she wanted one last plate of pasta made by him.
Jameson had learned to cook for Camille, so making a plate of pasta was no problem.
After he went downstairs, he remembered how her preferences had changed lately and turned back to ask her what she wanted.

The bedroom door was left ajar. Just as he reached out, he saw Sylvia, sitting upright in bed, shoving a huge piece of spicy beef jerky into her mouth.
His mind went completely blank.
She was supposedly unable to keep anything down–not for days now. That was why he had been indulging her every wish.
At that moment, he remembered the messages Camille had shown him.
He had brushed them off at the time, thinking that maybe Camille was just jealous, or
worse, she had staged it with a fake account.
He had not believed Sylvia would be putting on an act.
Now? He was seeing it with his own eyes.
He burst into the room.

Sylvia jumped, shoving the food under her pillow. Her face was still ghostly pale, but the spicy marinade at the corner of her mouth was glaringly obvious.
Jameson stared at her and called out coldly, “Sylvia Gray.”
Her eyes welled up with tears instantly. “Jameson, I can’t taste anything anymore. I just wanted to try something spicy…”
It was not the first time she used a sob story to excuse herself. This time, Jameson did not
believe a word.
He ignored her pleading and began rifling through the drawers and cabinets. He found not only beef jerky but imported chocolates, and handmade candy. There were snacks
everywhere.
Sylvia panicked. She did not even bother pretending to be weak anymore. She followed after him frantically. “Jameson, I can explain. Really, just listen to me!”
He turned abruptly, grabbed a cotton pad from the vanity, and rubbed it hard across her
face. It came away covered in foundation.
Sylvia tried to pull back, but he held her tightly.
She cried out in pain as tears streamed down her face, “You’re hurting me! My shoulder, it’s going to break…”
Jameson acted like he did not hear her at all and roughly wiped her face clean, revealing a
fair and rosy complexion underneath.
No one looking at that face would ever believe she was sick.
He suddenly remembered what Ryan had said at the hospital.
Jameson’s anger exploded. He let out a cold laugh, shaking his head again and again. “Sylvia! Wow, you really played me, huh? You had me running in circles this whole time. Bet you feel pretty clever, don’t you?”
“Jameson, I didn’t have a choice. You know how bad things are for my family—”
He cut her off with a violent shove, throwing her to the floor.
Then he grabbed his phone and tried to call Camille.
“The number you have dialed is unavailable…”
He called again and again. Then, it hit him. She had blocked him. He tried reaching out to her on social media, but he was blocked there too.
Panicking, he looked at the time and called the hospital where she worked.
“Dr. Fields? Oh, she resigned a while ago.”
The reply hit Jameson like a plunge into icy water.
