“Ms. Yates, something happened in the palace tonight.” Nolan stood outside the window, reporting softly. “I heard Prince Malik was injured and cooled back
“Someone tried to assassinate Prince Malik?” Jessica’s heart tensed.
Malik resided in Radiant Palace. Though it was located in a relatively outer part of the palace, it was still within the palace walls.
For someone to be attacked while inside the palace, this would definitely bring blame upon Novigrad,
Nolan replied, “Not sure. It’s said he was carried back from outside the palace. Earlier, Gail and the others had chased after someone out of the palace. They were gone for over half an hour before returning with Prince Malik.”
Jessica asked, “Has His Majesty sent anyone to investigate?”
“No.” Nolan shook his head.
Jessica frowned. “Nothing? How could they not investigate something this serious?”
Nolan said, “Prince Malik didn’t hold anyone accountable. He said… he said he injured himself by accident and even asked His Majesty not to make a fuss. So far, very few people know about it. A guard I’m familiar with happened to see Prince Malik being carried back. Otherwise, even i wouldn’t have
known.”
Palace guards didn’t officially belong to any specific faction, but everyone had a few “familiar faces” among them to keep informed of palace events in a timely manner.
Of course, under the King’s watchful eye, no one dared openly inquire, so any information gathered was purely “accidental.”
Tonight, the gatekeeper just so happened to be someone acquainted with Nolan. It was pure coincidence.
Nolan added, “But I heard that when Prince Malik was carried back, he was covered in blood. It looked like a serious injury.”
It wasn’t just Jessica who didn’t understand. Nolan couldn’t figure it out either. Someone actually had the audacity to attack Malik under the King’s nose.
Perhaps someone was trying to frame Novigrad, to stir up tensions between the two nations.
Moreover, Malik wouldn’t pursue the matter. Something about all this was seriously off.
“I understand. Go rest. Pretend you don’t know anything. Don’t tell Garbisch either. He has a long day. Let him rest,” Jessica said.
As Nolan was about to leave, Jessica added, “Don’t probe into anything in the palace for now.”
Nolan replied, “Understood!” With something this serious happening, the palace would surely rearrange its security detail.
If anyone was caught snooping at a time like this, they could be linked to Malik’s injury. And the consequences were unpredictable.
After Nolan left, Jessica sat on the edge of the bed, thinking hard. She still couldn’t figure out who had enough authority or power to beat Malik until he was soaked in blood. Strangely, Malik just let it slide.
She couldn’t make sense of it. So she decided to stop trying. She blew out the candle, ready to rest.
But just as she lay down, her beautiful eyes suddenly snapped open again. She got up and walked to the window. She flung it open.
A strong smell of blood hit her in the face, carried by the heavy night wind.
