Chapter 7
Mia froze for a second–the sarcasm in her eyes faded fast.
“You seriously didn’t know?”
“I told someone to let you know.”
Jake’s eyes narrowed–his voice dropped ice–cold.
“Who?”
“Who exactly did you tell to pass that message?”
Sergeant Major Harris turned, now staring at his wife too.
Mia’s face darkened.
She stomped upstairs and came down dragging a little boy, butt–naked and half–asleep.
“Jason!”
“A few days ago, when Emily called and said her father passed, I told you to tell Captain Jake to get his ass back home!”
“I couldn’t leave, so I sent you! Did you do it or not?”
Seven–year–old Jason, who was about to cry from being yanked out of bed, shrank back when he saw how mad his mom was.
He scratched his head and mumbled,
“I did tell him…”
“I went to Jake’s office first, but they said he was at the hospital with Jessica… so I went there next.”
Harris frowned.
“Jason, did you actually see Jake?”
Jason shook his head.
“I only found Jessica.”
“She said Jake went out to grab food.“.
“Asked me why I was looking for him. So I told her.”
Jake’s heart dropped.
His face clouded over.
“And then?”
Jason jumped at Jake’s tone, hiding behind Mia.
“Then Jessica told me to go home for dinner.”
“She said she’d let you know…”
Sergeant Major Harris’s face turned pitch black.
He gritted his teeth.
“And you just left?”

Chapter 7
Jason looked like he was about to cry again.
“I didn’t wanna go, but Jessica said if I got back late, I’d miss dinner…”
“She even gave me a bunch of candy–those big marshmallow ones… and told me not to tell anyone what we talked about.”
“Waaaah! Mom, I’m sorry! Don’t spank me!”
He grabbed his butt and wailed like a siren.
Harris and Mia looked like they were about to explode.
Harris yanked Jason up onto his knee and was about to pull his pants down.
“Wait.”
Jake stepped in, stopping Harris’s hand.
His voice was low, steady, dangerous.
“Sergeant Major, Mia–I want to hear Jessica explain this herself.”
Harris understood right away.
He met Mia’s eyes. Both nodded.
“Alright. We’re going with you.”
It was 9 PM.
Most of the lights in the neighborhood were off.
The whole street was quiet–everyone had turned in for the night.
Jake, Harris, Mia, and Jason made their way to the base infirmary.
Each step felt heavier than the last.
Outside the hallway, a few of their squadmates were still around-
The vibe was… tense.
When they saw the group approach, they straightened up fast.
“Sergeant Major Harris… Mia? What brings you here?”
Harris gave a short nod.
“We need to speak to Jessica. Something urgent.”
The group exchanged a glance.
Mike stepped forward.
“Sir, Jessica twisted her ankle.”
“She’s inside–getting treated right now.”
Before he even finished, Jake pushed the door open.
“Jake!”
Jessica turned around, startled–then her face lit up.
She clearly hadn’t expected him.

But Jake’s fists were clenched at his sides.
His eyes were steel.
“Jessica. I have one question.”
“Did you or did you not know that Emily’s father passed away?”
Jessica flinched–then instinctively shook her head.
“…Jake, why would you ask me that?
You didn’t know–how could I know?”
She couldn’t admit it.
Not in front of everyone.
If she did…
Not only would she lose Jake-
Her entire reputation would be toast.
She bit her tongue–just hard enough to stay calm.
Jake’s eyes were like knives
“Jessica… are you sure about that?”
Jessica turned her head away, avoiding his gaze.
“O–of course.
Jake, do you really think I’d lie to you?”
Sergeant Major Harris’s voice suddenly cut through the air like a whip.
“Jessica… I really underestimated you.”
Jessica froze.
Then she saw it.
Standing just behind Harris…
Was Mia-
With little Jason by her side.
