Faced with Chris’s dismissal, I panicked.
Sure, I was a mercenary, but no matter how tough I was, it didn’t change the physical disad- vantage I was born with as a woman.
That savage was over three meters tall, with thick skin–like armor.
In the past three days, even when I ambushed him and slashed at his neck with the sharpest rock I could find, all I managed was a shallow, barely noticeable cut.
Against someone with such overwhelming strength, everything I did was useless.
So I started begging Chris.
Begging him to remember the eight years I’d stood by his side, and just send one plane to get
me out.
“Chris, please… I’m begging you. Come save me. If you don’t, that savage is really going to violate me to death…”
Lillian, off to the side, let out a laugh like she’d just heard the funniest joke in the world.
“But Willette, every single Palmer family plane is busy livestreaming our wedding all across the country. Ninety–nine planes, you know. There’s not a single one left to come get you. Hang in there a little longer, okay?” she said sweetly.
I couldn’t take it anymore. I threw out my last card.
“Chris… I’m pregnant with your child. I’m begging you, please save me and the baby. Just one plane, it won’t ruin anything.”
I thought he’d rush to send someone, but instead, Chris actually laughed. A cold, mocking laugh.
“Willette, have you no shame? You’ll say anything to ruin my wedding with Lillian. First,

you’re terrified, now suddenly you’re pregnant? Seriously?”
Before I could even respond, he hung up.
But not fast enough. I still heard him turn to Lillian, his voice soft and gentle.
“Chris, I want one more plane to hang the wedding banners.”
“Of course! If you want it, you’ve got it.”
No time to cry.
The savage’s roars echoed nearby again, getting closer.
a
My hands shook as I tried to call Chris one more time, but I was already blocked.
I kept trying, over and over, refusing to give up, but still the same result.
I was out of hope.
Between Lillian and me, Chris always chose Lillian.

Last month, when Lillian was kidnapped by a rival family, Chris didn’t even hesitate before offering me in exchange for saving her.
Same excuse as always. “Lillian’s too delicate. She can’t wait.”
I was tortured so badly there wasn’t a single part of me left untouched. I only survived be- cause a passerby found me and called the police.
And now, once again, Chris chose to abandon me.
Just when I’d hit rock bottom, the phone in my hand suddenly lit up.
For a second, I thought maybe what he said earlier was just angry talk.
Maybe, deep down, he still cared and had sent someone to get me.
Then I saw the message, and whatever hope I had left was completely shattered.
“Willette, you’re just a dog Chris kept around for too long. What makes you think you can

compete with me? Now I’m the one marrying him. Be a good little stray and disappear. Go live happily ever after with your wild beast.”
Right after, she sent a flood of photos. Wedding pictures of her and Chris, and the news arti- cles about the savage.
Even the local authorities hadn’t been able to deal with him.
One photo after another, stabbing into me like knives.
What was left to not understand? It had all been a setup. Lillian’s setup.
I let out a bitter laugh. I’d been with Chris for eight years.
a
In those eight years, I’d taken bullets for him, tasted poison for him, and even slept with him.
Back then, he used to smile and promise, “I’ll take care of you for the rest of my life.”
And now, none of that meant anything. All of it crumbled in front of one soft–spoken word from Lillian, “Chris.”
Just as I finished reading the message, my phone battery finally died. The screen went black.
I sat there, blankly holding the phone, blinking at nothing, eyes dry and burning.
I didn’t even have time to cry. Right then, the savage’s big, hairy face suddenly lunged out from the shadows, knocking me flat to the ground.
It started making a strange, guttural sound that sent chills crawling down my spine.
“Hehe…”
