Chapter 13 Get a New Mommy

When the Adams family was in trouble, the Martins could’ve helped, but didn’t.
The scandal blew up online, their circle calling the Martins heartless.
When outrage peaked, Walter announced Caleb and Caroline’s
engagement.
And then? She became the “scheming gold–digger,” taking the heat.
The Martin family’s cold reputation faded as the mob turned on her.
Hearing her words, Walter’s stern expression softened.
“I’ve been a fool,” he admitted, regret tinged his tone. “I failed to rein in my grandson. You’re quitting and filing for divorce, so you must be strapped. Take this check as an apology for snapping at you. Start a business, open a shop, whatever you
want.”
His sudden sincerity caught her off guard.
Caroline eyed the staggering figure on the check, hesitating.
Walter pressed it into her hand. “Take this, and you’re done

with us. I’ll call off all the eyes on you. You’ll be free.”
Just then, the study door flew open.

Caleb stormed in, cradling Dominic in his arms, his face dark as a thundercloud.
“Well, well, Caroline. Got your hands on that sweet check, didn’t you?” He smirked. “Pretty rich calling me out when you’re just as bad. Who’s the real snake in this marriage?”
“Dad was right about you!” Dominic pointed at her.
“Gold–digger! You don’t deserve him! I hate having you as my mom!”
A sharp pang stabbed Caroline’s chest, but she swallowed her hurt and fired back with a bitter laugh.
“Hate me? Please. I’m the one stuck with a kid like you. Carried you, raised you, and now you’re stabbing me in the back? Biggest mistake of my life.”
Dominic’s face flushed with frustration, his eyes welling up, but he couldn’t muster a comeback.
“ENOUGH!” Walter roared. “This cash? My choice to give it to Caroline. She wants out because you cheated. Now get lost!”
That tone. It hit Caleb hard. It took him right back to when they forced him to marry her.

Defiance flared up in him like a lit fuse.

“Save it,” he snapped, ice in his voice. “I didn’t do a damn thing wrong. And Caroline? You clawed your way into this marriage. Now you wanna bail? Hell no. And running to my grandpa? Real classy.”
Walter sank back into his chair, his weathered face unreadable.
A jolt ran through Caroline. She realized she’d been played.
Walter had dangled the money like bait, all generous and remorseful, then timed it perfectly for Caleb to barge in and see
- it.
He didn’t want their divorce. He’d just spun this whole act to trap her in the marriage, banking on Caleb’s stubborn streak to keep her locked in.
Now she saw the old man’s cunning for what it really was.
After a moment’s thought, Caroline set the check back on the
table.
“Sir Martin, I’ve paid back every favor I owed,” she said evenly. “This money doesn’t sit right with me. If I’m starting a business, I’ll do it on my own terms. I want nothing from this marriage.”
Caleb’s expression twisted into something odd.

“What favor?” His voice was frigid. “Grandpa, what kind of deal did you two cook up behind my back?”
Caroline shot Walter a knowing, loaded smile. “You two take your time hashing it out. I’m out of here.”
Dominic, sensing the tension thickening, didn’t want to stick around either. He instinctively moved to follow her.
Yet, Caroline shoved him back with a cold glare. “Didn’t you want a new mommy? Stay put, then. Once they’re done talking, you’ll have one in no time.”
With that, she slipped out and shut the door softly behind her.
From inside, Caleb’s stunned voice erupted.
“So when the Adams family crashed, it wasn’t about tight funds… You chose not to help them?”

Out in the front garden, a woman draped in glittering jewels was instructing the servants on watering the flowers.
The moment she spotted Caroline, her polished facade melted into raw disdain.
“You ill–bred little leech! You’ve milked us dry, and now you’re

“Do you seriously think Caleb kept you around because he couldn’t bear to let you go? Just know your place. Push more, and things are gonna get real ugly.”
“I might’ve grown up without parents, but at least I don’t cheat,” Caroline replied coolly. “Right, Brianna?”
The woman, radiating arrogance, was Caleb’s mother, Brianna Martin.
Brianna’s face turned ashen with fury. “How dare you!
Trash–talking my son? The real mistress here is you! Caleb was supposed to marry Michelle!”
“Funny,” Caroline smirked. “Back then, you sang a different tune. If you’d green–lit Caleb marrying Michelle back then, she’d be here trading barbs with you.”
“What nonsense!” Brianna snapped. “I only objected because they were too young!”
“Michelle’s passport? Faked her age by a year. She could’ve married Caleb right then.” Caroline leaned in. “What’s gonna happen when Caleb finds out, huh? Think he’ll hate you for it?”
Brianna had always looked down on Michelle, convinced her precious son deserved someone better.

When Caleb and Michelle were an item, she’d thrown every roadblock she could in their way.
But what happened later was beyond her expectations. The Adams family had their accident, and in the end, Caleb married Caroline.
Her biggest fear was Caleb learning the truth and turning on her.
Her expression soured further. “What’s your game here? Keep spouting lies, and you’ll regret it!”
“Here’s the deal,” Caroline whispered. “I’ll keep your secret. Just do me one favor. Help me out, and I swear I’m gone for good.”
