Erik’s pupils dilated instantly. He stared at me in disbelief.
But I simply continued in a calm voice, “Erik, I told you that night before you left–if you chose to go to that war–torn place, you had to take responsibility for your decision.”
My gaze slowly fell to his bandaged leg. Blood had already seeped through, turning dark.
“You have to bear the cost of being injured by an explosion and nearly losing your leg.”
“You have to face the consequences of your parents losing sleep, spending all their savings, and
pulling every string to get you sent back.”
“And more importantly, you have to accept that you’ve lost me, lost our daughter, and lost the home
we once built together.”
“You’re a man. And when a man makes a promise, he should keep it.”
Erik’s body began to tremble violently.
Perhaps even he hadn’t expected that I would let go so completely.
After all, during our seven years of marriage, I never made a fuss.
When he didn’t give me money for daily expenses, I never asked. When he didn’t want to do chores,
I handled everything alone.
He said he needed personal space and asked if he could spend two nights a week in his study–1
agreed.
He always thought I loved him with no boundaries.
And he was right.
I did love him. I loved him deeply.
Otherwise, how could a woman like me–terrified of marriage–have willingly stepped into it? Risked my health to get pregnant and give birth for him?

But in the end, he destroyed the only time in my life I gave my all without reservation.
I don’t hate him. After all, every choice was mine. I accept the consequences, and I blame no one.
But that doesn’t mean I’ll stay silent forever, or keep compromising.
A man who still had another woman in his heart during our marriage–I had already given him the
greatest patience I could.
Just then, as Erik and I locked eyes in silence, Aria suddenly stepped out of the crowd, her face
anxious.
“Freya, there really was nothing between Erik and me. You misunderstood.”
I gave a cold smile, my lips curving slightly.
“Whether I misunderstood or not isn’t the point. But if you really don’t want to be misunderstood,
you can start by returning the over one million he gave you.”
I took out a prepared document and handed it to her.
“These are the bank records showing Erik’s transfers to the charity projects you were managing over the years. From a few thousand to tens of thousands, it adds up to over a million. That’s marital property. Even if it was donated, I have the legal right to reclaim it.”
“If I file a lawsuit, your foundation might run into some trouble.”
I paused, my gaze still locked on her.
“Also–what right does an ex–girlfriend of Erik’s have to tell me not to hold him accountable? Stay away from me. You make me sick.”
With that, I turned back to Erik, whose face had gone pale.
“Looks like you might not be able to sign the divorce papers today. That’s fine.”
I put the papers back into my bag, my tone flat and steady. “Rest up. Get well enough to walk with crutches so we can finish the divorce properly.”
Then I turned and walked straight out of the airport without a trace of hesitation.
People started whispering behind me, their stares like needles–but I ignored them all.

I walked with my back straight and shoulders high.
But only I knew how deeply my nails had dug into my palms, the pain so sharp it almost numbed me
They say divorce is like being flayed alive.
They’re not wrong.
It’s just that some people can’t endure that pain–while others can.
And I happen to be the latter.
