Chapter 13
-BEA-
Bea’s back went straight, and her shoulders stiffened before she said, “What do you want, Steward?” She used his title instead of his name. She was still startled by his entrance. She assumed the man wouldn’t be back around after he was freed of his duties.
“I must not be remiss in the Prince’s medicine. His porridge, I must feed it to him.” He moved to walk forward, but Bea hurried up to him and placed her hands under the tray.
“Here, let me. These are my duties now, after all. I’ll make sure he gets the medication.”
Instead of handing her the carrying tray, he backed up and pulled it into his chest. “No, I must make sure that he eats it. As I’ve said, he spits, and his jaw must be clamped properly, in order to feed him the porridge.”
“I’m sure you are right, and he did spit with you, but I’ve found it quite easy to feed him.” She moved to take the tray, but once again, he backed up. This time, until he bumped into the doors.
“No, only I can get him to eat it.”
Exasperated, Bea leaned over and scooped up the silver spoon full of porridge and walked back over to Dax.
“Watch as I show you that I have no issues with feeding him.” Leaning down in front of his face, she winked at Dax. Obviously, this person was going to insist on feeding Dax unless she showed him that she could do it herself, but she also didn’t trust him. Why was he pushing so hard? Why would Dax refuse it? Since he was still conscious then there must be a reason he didn’t want the meal.
Scraping the contents under the sheet, she made a show to lift the spoon and then bring it to Dax’s mouth. Without issue, he opened his mouth and pretended to chew.
“See?” Bea turned and walked back up to David. She already didn’t like the man, but if Dax also had issues with him, then she too would follow her Master’s steps. She would not trust the Steward.
She grabbed the tray and pulled it until he let go. “Now, I’ll make sure he gets his food AND his medicine. Please bring me the bottle and I’ll administer it to him… daily?”
She paused and waited for him to answer. He was still staring at Dax, and the bluster and frustration that she watched cross his face was almost enough to make her smile. Instead, she pushed for an answer. “Steward?”
He blinked before tightening his mouth up like a raisin and nodding. “Daily, I’ll have it delivered today.” And without properly dismissing himself, he turned and left the room.
What. A. jackass.” Then she turned and walked back over to Dax, placing the serving tray on his dresser. “I could fire him, you know. The lawyer who stood in for you at our wedding told me that I have complete control over the staffing and food that’s maintained here at Dax Castle. That includes medicine.”
She lifted the bowl to her face and smelled the aroma, also noticing the bits of sliced purple petals that were mixed into the porridge. The smell of Wolfsbane permeated the air and caused her stomach to tighten. She’d been

fed the awful plant once when Rebecca tried to bring out Bea’s Wolf. The awful paralysis and seizures that wracked her body will always be a painful memory. She had still never heard from her Wolf and was deemed useless.
Luckily, her werewolf genes did kick in and burned through the poison. She was able to return to her duties the next day.
“Wolfsbane.” She spoke to herself. Trying to piece together the reason anyone would give Wolfsbane to an invalid. They couldn’t know whether or not Dax was in pain, and he had no cough or fever that would be treated by the plant.
She turned from the bowl and looked at Dax. Grabbing the napkin on the tray, she collected the discarded spoonful that she’d hidden in the sheets.
“Did you know that your porridge contained Wolfsbane?”
