Chapter 4
The iron rod struck my leg with dull thuds–once, twice, three times… fifteen blows in total.
The sound of breaking bones was unmistakable.
I passed out from the pain and was dumped at the Sullivan mansion’s front gate.
The antiseptic smell in the hospital was overwhelming.
From the VIP room next door came Natalia’s voice: “Cousin, you’re exhausting yourself watching
over me every day!”
My heart felt crushed beyond repair.
Xavier, you would go this far for Natalia’s revenge?
“Sweetheart!” My father burst into the room and held me tight, his voice trembling. “Who did this?
I’ll make them wish they were never born!”
‘Dad, it’s okay,” I forced a smile through the pain. “Just get me a new security team!”
‘By the way, Dominic is still alive. After we get married, he’ll protect me too.”
After my father left, I hobbled to the window on crutches.
in the garden below, Xavier was spinning Natalia in circles on his back. She whispered something in is ear that made the tips of his ears turn red as he smiled tenderly–a smile I’d never received from
- im.
The day before the wedding, Dominic arrived, travel–worn and still smelling of earth.
de carefully pulled out a smooth jade stone from his pocket. “A wedding gift for you, Miss Sullivan!”
The groom finally returns,” I said loudly as I accepted the jade, deliberately raising my voice.
Dominic stood frozen, his eyes instantly reddening, lips trembling speechlessly.
My assistant quietly informed me that Xavier had been missing for days.

I smirked coldly. He was waiting for me to crawl back, begging him through tears to marry me. Too
bad his little power play had completely backfired.
That evening, my phone suddenly vibrated.
Natalia had sent me a video–in it, she and Xavier entangled together in bed, too explicit to describe.
But within seconds, she recalled the message.
“Amateur move,” I scoffed, shutting off my phone. Their childish games were becoming tiresome.
Standing by the window, I spotted Dominic alone beneath the starlit sky, gazing up at my window.
He waved at me, his smile warm and resolute.
In that moment, my heart settled with a certainty I’d never felt before.
Early on the morning of the wedding, my phone rang.
“If you apologize to Natalia right now, I’ll come marry you immediately,” Xavier’s voice still carried
that entitled tone.
“That won’t be necessary,” I ended the call crisply, a cold smile playing on my lips.
At the wedding venue, guests whispered among themselves.
“Where’s Xavier Rhodes?”
“Is the wedding being called off?”
I ignored them all, walking down the aisle on Dominic’s arm.
His muscles tensed beneath his suit, yet he carefully controlled his strength, afraid of hurting my still–healing leg.
“Ladies and gentlemen, let’s congratulate Mr. Dominic Vega and Miss Sullivan!” the pastor
announced.
Just then, the ballroom doors were thrown open.
Xavier stood in the doorway, his face ashen, the bouquet in his hand dropping to the floor with a soft
thud.

I curved my lips into a smile and, meeting his disbelieving gaze, deliberately kissed Dominic on the
lips.
