I moved back into my parents‘ place.”
As soon as my deadbeat dad heard I was divorcing Lucas, he lost it and called me reckless and ungrateful.
Honestly, I felt nothing for him, so I just let him rage without saying a word.
John, on the other hand, was over the moon.
“Natasha, I’m so glad you’re back.
“We don’t need that jerk to protect us!

“Even if I end up begging on the street, I won’t ever beg from his family!”
The fire in his eyes made my heart ache a little.
“Natasha, from now on, I’ll protect you.”
That one sentence made everything I had done worth it.
A few days later, Lucas showed up at our house. I thought he came to finalize the divorce. Heck, I already had the pen ready.
But no, instead of papers, he came here to take me home.
He said, “Just pretend nothing happened. Break it off with that ungrateful guy, and you’ll still be Mrs. Callahan.”
“You’re on birth control, right? I don’t want any extra baggage in the future.”
He said it with that smug, self–important look on his face.
“Natasha, I’ve done everything I could for you. I hope you’ll take this chance to change and take care of yourself.”

I burst into laughter.
“Why should I break it off with him?
“I should break it off with you!

“Where’s the divorce agreement? I’ll sign it right now. The sooner we erase each other from our lives, the better.”
My bluntness hit him hard. He looked genuinely hurt like a kid who had just been told Santa Claus was not real.
“Natasha, what happened to you?
“You used to be so sweet and innocent!
“You betrayed the past you.
“I’m so disappointed in you right now!”
He was getting all worked up, and honestly, his words made no sense.
Seeing my confusion, he launched into the story of how he nearly drowned ten years ago.
“I fell in love with you that day. It’s unfortunate that I didn’t remember your face.
“I searched for years, but I got tricked and got the wrong girl.
“This whole thing was one big mistake!
“But now, I know the truth. You were the one who saved me. It was always you.
“That’s why I’m willing to forgive everything and give you a second chance, Natasha. Don’t waste it.”
I finally understood why he got so obsessed with Marilyn.
It was because he thought she was the girl from ten years ago.
Marilyn was just a stand–in for me.

And I am supposed to be moved by that?
Not a chance.
The whole thing felt like a knockoff soap opera, so dramatic it was almost funny.

Falling for your first love does not justify cheating, and it sure as hell does not erase the way he treated me.
Whatever feelings I once had for Lucas were long gone.
The more obsessed he acted, the more disgusted I felt.
Yeah, I remember that day ten years ago. I was on my way to a match and pulled some drowning kid out of the water.
That kid was him. Lucas.
“So this is fate, huh?” I said with a dry laugh.
“I honestly wish I had just kept walking.”
