“I told you to apologize!
“Natasha, are you deaf or just ignoring me?”
Lucas’s voice rose, snapping me out of my thoughts.
He looked at me–not with love, not with respect–just with cold indifference.
Because from the start, our marriage was never built on equality.
In the world of the elite, marriage is just another business deal.
My mom died young, and my dad? A total scumbag.
He has a bunch of illegitimate kids out there, all hungry to snatch away what belongs to me and my brother.
I am not letting the company my mom poured her soul into fall into anyone else’s hands.
So I needed Lucas.
With him, at least my brother and I had a shield when we went back to my mom’s house.
“I’m sorry,” I bit down my pride and apologized to the mistress–me, the legal wife.
“Pfft!”
Marilyn smirked smugly.
And right on cue, the crowd joined in with snide whispers and mocking glances.
My eyes stung, but I forced back the tears.
Crying now would do nothing, as no one here would feel bad for me. It would just make things worse.

Chapter 2
“Baby, feeling better now?”
Lucas, as if he did not notice a thing, went on comforting his darling side chick.
“My dress is ruined, and she still gets to wear hers? That’s just not fair!”
Marilyn pouted sweetly, and Lucas immediately caught on.
He stormed over, grabbed my collar, and yanked.
Rip!

The sound was sharp, and the fabric split open, exposing my bare shoulders and the straps of my black bra.
Gasps echoed around the room.
I bit my lip, letting tears well up, and slowly slide down my cheeks, putting on the look of someone deeply wronged.
“Lucas, I’m your wife,” I said, my voice shaking.
“Do you really have to go this far?”
He just scoffed coldly, showing no hint of regret.
“You’re jealous. You couldn’t stand seeing Marilyn in the spotlight, so you ruined her dress? Fine.
“I won’t let your little plan work. Since you’re so bitter, no one gets to wear the dress. That’s fair to Marilyn.”
What a joke.
Do you want to stand up for your mistress in front of your wife?
“Lucas, just let it go. Don’t be so hard on her,” Adam Castellanos, the Callahan family’s adopted son, finally spoke up, trying to ease the tension.
“Stay out of my marriage!”

Lucas cut him off without a second thought, not even glancing at him. His burning eyes stayed locked on me.
“If you can’t handle it, divorce me.
“If you won’t divorce me, then you better learn your place.
“Marilyn is under my protection. If you mess with her, you’re messing with me.”
He stood there like some untouchable god, towering over me and crushing my pride under- foot.
Because he knew all my soft spots–my vulnerabilities, my family’s situation–he could stab deep and not even flinch.
