Chapter 18
Gretchen thought she wouldn’t see Howard again for a long time after that day.
But just two days had passed, and she saw him not far from her doorstep.
Forcing down her impatience, she sent a message and took a few steps towards him, still keeping a certain distance. She asked, “What are you here for?”
He seemed to not notice her impatience, looking humble like a lover who can’t have his love, eager to prove his true feelings to
his beloved.
“Grete…”
The man’s voice was a bit hoarse, with bloodshot eyes that were truly frightening. He looked exhausted, but there was no sign of fatigue in his eyes, only a hint of pride. Unfortunately, she was not willing to appreciate it.
“Mr. Wiggins still prefers to call me Ms. Belton, after all, our relationship isn’t at the nickname level yet.”
She had a cold face, and her words were like a bucket of cold water poured over his head.
Howard opened his mouth, feeling heavy and sad in his heart, but after a while, he still forced a smile and said, “Grete, even if
you don’t admit it, you can’t erase the past between us. I know you’re still blaming me, but I will prove to you that I really know
I was wrong.”
“The people who bullied you before, I will make them all pay the price they deserve. As for Veronica, what kind of ending do you want for her? Just let me know, how?”
He was eager to get closer, but she calmly kept her distance, “Just say what you have to say, I’m not in the mood to play your
childish games. If you really want to apologize for what happened before, then…”
Gretchen originally wanted to say to stay away from her, to leave her life, but Howard seemed to sense her intention and
quickly interrupted her, “I won’t give up! Grete, I love you, I really can’t be without you. Give me some more time. Whatever they did to you before, I’ll help you get revenge, okay?”
“Wait for me, wait for me, I won’t let any of those people go.”
He was talking, but at the same time seemed afraid that she might say something he didn’t want to hear. Without even giving
her a chance to respond, he quickly turned and left.
Gretchen watched as his figure slowly faded away, not saying anything.
She just watched quietly, and suddenly a few expectations rose in her heart.
Did she miss anything? She really wanted to see what Howard would do.
“Grete!”
Just then, another voice came from far away, getting closer, with a hint of urgency. The person walked up to her, put a hand on her shoulder, and carefully looked her over from head to toe. Only after confirming that she was not injured did Lorenzo finally breathe a sigh of relief.
“Did he leave?”
“Who is he talking about?” Both of them knew it. Gretchen nodded, opened the door, and looked back at him. “Come in for a cup of tea?”

“Well, I’ll just have to go along with it then.”
The teapot was bubbling with hot water, and Lorenzo, familiarly, changed his shoes and followed her into the room. The sunlight streamed through the French windows into the living room, casting a warm glow on the two of them. The house wasn’t big, but it was very cozy.
He looked around and his gaze finally landed on her.
“Do you still feel comfortable living here?”
Gretchen nodded and smiled at him, “I really like it here, thank you.”
Lorenzo didn’t answer, just kept staring at her without looking away. After a while, she heard him say, “I’m glad that you thought of me first at a time like this.”
Compared to the slightly polite Q&A before, this sentence is definitely more ambiguous.
She understood Lorenzo’s feelings, but right now she couldn’t respond to him, at least not at the moment. She was more grateful to him.
