“I am your dad, not this stranger, Zoe!”
Felix’s high–pitched yelling frightened the innocent kid, Zoe was riveted to his spot like a scared kitten. Scolding him like this was insane, nobody should raise their voice at young kids as such traumatic moments could scar the hearts of kids of tender age.
I was about to give him a piece of my mind when Felix started coughing, gasping for air, James rushed to call the duty doctor. Bright and I shot up, standing by his side to help him. But the doctor asked us to wait outside.
Zoe was in tears as we walked out of the room, he cried out.
“I am so sorry, mommy. I didn’t mean to hurt dad. He is sick because of me.”
His teary eyes melted my heart, I crouched down and wiped his tears with tissue paper.
“Don’t cry, Zoe. It’s not your fault. Your dad is already sick, that’s why we are here to visit him.”
Felix was recovering from heart surgery, so stress and anger were lethal for him. The doctor stabilized his condition
and advised us.
“Please try to keep him away from stress and tension. He should be relaxed and happy to heal smoothly.”
James’s accusing glare aka ‘it was your fault‘ fumed me, it was like he and the doctor were suggesting that Felix’s condition worsened because of me. If he wasn’t in the hospital, I would have told them that Felix had jeopardized my life, I was just repaying him in installments.
Anyway, I went to see him alone this time, his exhausted look forced me to use a soft tone.
“Felix, you must take a rest and follow the doctor’s advice. Don’t worry about Zoe, he is a child. I will talk to him
later.”
Felix looked at me intently, listening to my assurances. He uttered only one question to respond to me.
“What is Jane’s relationship with Bright, Drielle?”
I suddenly remembered that we hadn’t announced Jane’s paternity in public, Felix must be wondering why Jane was calling Bright ‘daddy‘ in the first place. After all, Zoe followed her pursuit and addressed him daddy as well.
Clearing my throat, I spoke solemnly to reveal the secret of my life. The one I never regretted despite hitting the breaking news.
“Bright is Jane’s biological father, Felix. He wished to be called as daddy of his princess.”
The bitterness of Felix’s previous stunt to blackmail me from prison hung the tension in the air, suffocating me. I felt uneasy to discuss this topic with the person who slut shamed me because of my life’s choices.

After a momentary pause, Felix’s voice sliced through the air, shattering the silence in the room.
“But you had a child through IVF procedure. How can you say that…”
He voiced out his surprise for Bright, as he accepted his daughter easily. I was taken aback by his audacity to mention that scandal. Well, if he was a presumptuous man, I could be thick–skinned effortlessly.
“Actually, a social media trend helped me to solve my biggest problem when you were in the prison, Felix. Bright saw me on the TV show and appreciate my honesty, eagerly participating in the life of his lost daughter.
He is thrilled to be a father.”
I boasted about my exemplary family life, flexing it before a so–called lonely man. It was so satisfactory to utilize his strengths against him. His assistant portrayed him as a pitiful man to garner others‘ sympathy, painting me as a criminal. So, I showed him what he was missing as a loner.
Felix was flustered, more precisely, ashamed of the reference of the public humiliation I faced as a single mom. But he flinched at the term ‘lost daughter.‘
“You used a donor, Drielle. Bright wouldn’t have known about Jane’s existence until you told him so. Then how can she be his lost daughter?
You have never met him before …”
